"Good jrpgs" I can think of focus on hybrid gameplay mechanics rather than tryhard stories, they still aren't that much about roleplaying but at least they are good games.
You keep missing my point because you're too focused precisely on the wrong part.

I'm saying that roleplay is outright not possible in videogames (because there's no way to program a computer to let you do all that stuff and make sense out of it, you absolutely need a human coordinating all that), and with the roleplay part removed the only part left is be the tedious battle bullshit. So the derived videogame genres had to come up with something else to fill in the gap, because from a mechanical viewpoint they're pretty boring honestly (and the ones that aren't are actually closer to unrelated genres, e.g. hack'n'slash is more related to action games).

Ah I get your point now but honestly I don't quite agree, while video games don't fully replace the real thing you can still get pretty close with enough amount of depth, detail and options put into the roleplaying mechanics, which is what some old-school wRPGs did in a pretty respectable way: there is a main story and pre-set stuff but you are given enough agency to do it in a bunch of different ways tied to your character traits that aren't limited only to combat. Similarly to tabletop RPGs, even if you feel you have a lot of freewill you still have specific setting, key characters and goals to fulfill determined by the GM beforehand.
I think it's alright to like those story-focused jRPGs that offer a VN-style experience with lite gameplay, but I would hardly say that they are good games, let alone good RPGs. Turning a game into a 40 hours movie with cookie-cutter gameplay just because you can't handle interaction intricacies nor mechanical depth just feels like a crutch.

The great thing about Pier Solar HD is that Tulio added with the final patch an extremely much needed encounter rate toggle, battle speed toggle and battle animation on/off toggle (healing outside of battle also occurs at rate of battle speed toggle and now showcases all character statuses). Unfortunately if you're playing the MegaDrive/Genesis version, there's no way to avoid encounters or speed up the battle speed. In Pier Solar HD you can turn off encounters at any time, half them, increase them or speed up the battle speed to i think 4x so that non-boss battles last 20 seconds at most but sometimes only 5 seconds if the enemy group is weak lol. That final patch completely transformed the game imo, just one of many reasons why I think the HD version is 1000x better than the MegaDrive version.

Not to get too off topic but that's what I love about remasters of older jrpgs is that they pretty much always have battle speed toggles now. Final Fantasy XII added one, The Last Remnant added one, Final Fantasy X added one (not on ps3 or ps4 though but on PC and i think Xbox One), and other jrpgs.

Oh that's good to know, I only ever played the original. Got to see if I can track down a copy for my Wii U.

I know this is off topic but just wanted to mention that the final patch also added a new game+ mode and fixed a trophy/achievement called Shop-a-holic so entire achievement list is obtainable.

I think this oneís finally died a death now. Iím just thankful we got to see the likes of Tanglewood and Xeno Crisis to make up for the shambles.

I know itís subjective but I really dig all the artwork for Paprium and the soundtrack was to die for. If only Fonzie would release all the assets to a coding supergroup comprised of BigEvil, Bitmap Bureau, and former Watermelon. One can dream!

Just been on YouTube and found this:

Was only uploaded a month ago. Is this the beginning of the contributors losing their patience and just releasing stuff themselves?

Looks like it. Can't blame Groovemaster303. None of the contributors deserved this.

I clicked on that expecting to finally see the near complete game running on real hardware that he insisted he played. :/

If we ever hear from the guy again, I bet it will be along this line:

"We couldn't possibly have known a pandemic would hit the world 8 years after we started the development of the game!"

The music and sprite work for this game is master crafted. I love everything GrooveMaster303 and xGoldenboyX created. It molds together so seamlessly and the style, although akin to Streets of Rage, is very unique and oozes with nostalgia. It kills me to think about all of this beautiful creativity just being lost to time. Another developer needs to pick up the pieces and put them together in all of their glory. So many game developers know about this project and it's troubled development, I can't believe no one has offered to help stop the bleeding yet.

In the right hands, we'd have a much deserved Sega beat'em up. Everyone here who has followed, contributed, and cheered this thing on deserves such justice. It's been nearly ten years now! I say release some of the assets and reach out to a few indie developers with the material. Honestly, I promised myself I wouldn't post on this board anymore but it's impossible to stay silent when artistically, Paprium is the stuff dreams are made of and there's also the small fact that I'm out over $100 on the thing!
