    Megadrive Classic Interview: Ken Sugimori

Before he made everyone feel the need to "catch 'em all," Ken Sugimori released a great 16-bit platformer featuring a super hero named Pulseman for the Mega Drive. He spoke about its Virtual Console release with Sega of Japan's Sega Voice in 2007, and Sega-16 is happy to present the translated interview for your enjoyment. Read on for the full interview!

That was a blast to read! Great idea for a new feature series! :-)
The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.

    Awesome interview!
It came as a big surprise for me that Ken is a Sega and a Mega Drive fan.

Awesome interview to see translated! To make a minor correction, though, the usual translation of "Taluluto-kun" is Taruruuto-kun. You'll find the games listed on GameFAQs and the like under that name, Magical Taruruuto-kun.

Heh, I think I'd go insane if I was an arcade game lover that had to spend most of my game development career making an RPG series.

We actually have an earlier interview with Vic Ireland that was originally published in the Popful Mail strategy guide. You can find that in the features section or by clicking the "Classic Interview" tag at the bottom of this article. I'd love to have more, but it's not easy translating interviews done in Japanese.
