Sonic fangames have been a thing since the late '90s at least. And Sonic 2 HD is a really old project... I think this may be the third attempt (the amount of drama this project generates can't be overstated). Also Sega does have a policy of not interferring with Sonic fangames as long as profit isn't being made... but in practice this depends on what lawyer firm they're employing at the moment (if there are suddenly a lot of DMCAs from Sega, you can assume they switched to another firm).

Why fangames are getting trailers that rival the quality of professional studios, that's more worth asking.

He sent a build of his Sonic CD remake directly to Sega when they were asking people what games they'd like to see remade and they didn't look a gift horse in the mouth.

The simple answer is the tools needed to make a professional looking product are a lot more readily available than they used to be.

And the fans care more than the professional studios do most of the time.

Yeah, isn't YouTube full of fan re-cut trailers for all kinds of things these days?

Ey, it seems they released a new version today! Guys, did you try it? It looks great so far! (I just.... love S3+S&K, but we cannot have everything right? :P)

It looks beautiful, specially Chemical plant.
It is a shame that this remaster is of Sonic 2.
Sonic 1, CD, 3 or Knuckles would be much much amazing.
I fell in love with Mega drive in 1991. Now programing for it...

To me the hd just doesn't sit right. I can't fathom why but when I watch it the movement seems off.

Tee Lopes was responsible for some of the music in the previous release, although I'm unsure if any of that music remains in this version. He is credited in the latest release, though, so I'm not too sure. Also, some of the people who worked on the previous release are also part of PagodaWest Games, one of the trio of developers (Christian Whitehead(Taxman), Simon Thomley (Stealth/Headcannon) and PagodaWest Games) for Sonic Mania (and possibly also worked on the latest release), so there is that.

He's credited as past staff I believe, though I'd need to check again to make sure.

Wow, this looks ace. An Android port would be super.
