Default School me on the Master System!

So as Sega-16 readies itself to go back to looking at the Master System, I feel it's finally time for me to go take a look at it as well beyond emulation.

Regardless, it's a console I don't know a whole lot about and I trust the recommendations of you guys over most other site when it comes to all-things Sega.

So here's what I already have:

    Alex Kidd in Miracle World
    Rastan
    Shinobi
    Zaxxon 3-D

And here's what I already know I want.

Fantasy Zone 2 (I'm happy with the Sunsoft Famicom port of the first one but the second one is a definite for the Master System)
    Double Dragon
    Quartet
Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap
    Zillion

So what else should I be looking into?

Things I'm not interested in are games with better ports on the Genesis, RPGs or games that are prohibitively expensive like Power Strike.

Are there any other good shmups? Any must-have platforming gems? Any decent action games?

All these are worth playing (E) - Euro exclusive

Master of Darkness (SMS take on Castlevania, quite good) (E)
Castle of Illusion (completely different from the MD game, I think better)
    Land of Illusion (E)
Kenseiden (nice hack n slash action game)
The three Asterix games (great platformers) (E)
    Golvellius (nice action adventure)
    Zillion (Metroid like, requires patience)
Spider-Man (different from MD version, still good)
Ghouls n Ghosts (again, different enough from MD version to warrant a look)
    Shinobi
Ninja Gaiden (different game, less punishing than the NES series) (E)
Lucky Dime Caper (great disney platformer) (E)
    Deep Duck Trouble (ditto) (E)
Psycho Fox (great platformer, spiritual predecessor to Decap Attack)
Spellcaster (action game with digital comic segments)

No, it's unbiased analysis. The only fanboyism is people who claim that Hyperstone Heist and Bloodlines are actually as good as their SNES counterparts.

I second zetastrike's great list. And I'd add the following:
    - The New Zealand Story (E): It's a very good port of the original version of the arcade game (NOT the Extra version which was ported to the Mega Drive)
    - Alex Kidd in Shinobi World: MUST have IMO. Game Sack covered it very well some time ago.
    - Enduro Racer (J): The Japanese version has more tracks and some more trackside objects as well. A solid and tough game IMO.
    - Super Racing (J): This is actually a very good top-down racer, far better than the similar games on the Mega Drive IMO. It's even better with the analog paddle, but it's very good either way IMO.
    - Buggy Run (E), (AU) or (Brazil): Really addictive and fun. 2P support.
    - R-Type: MUST HAVE.

Thanks guys. I do like Psycho Fox and somehow totally forgot about R-Type.

Alex Kidd in Shinobi World is another one I'm looking at. I wish I'd picked that one up at the flea market when I had the chance.

Lucky Dime Caper looks right up my alley too.

Is Spellcaster the one that's sort-of related to Mystic Defender?

If you like light gun games, don't forget about Space Gun (E), Gangster Town, and Rescue Mission.

Space Gun is cool, too bad the Sega CD or 32X or Saturn never got a proper port from the arcade.
Gangster Town is pretty awesome in terms of supporting simultaneous 2P.

Dude, if you want to try good Master System games, do yourself a favor and spare yourself from AKiSW! Despite what may sound like an interesting premise, it is by far the weakest Alex Kidd game - in fact, I found it to be outright annoying! Best to be avoided.
The funny thing about an oxymoron is, even if you remove the ox, there'll always be a moron. The Question Remains: Y?

People seem to want way too much for it anyway.

How comes no one suggested Cloud master yet?

Also, try to get an FM upgrade

    Here are my recommendations.

    1. Get Viletim's FM sound module. Very easy mod. Here--->http://etim.net.au/smsfm/smsfm.html and Here --->http://etim.net.au/shop/shop.php

    2. These are the games I recommend...

    Alex Kidd
    Alex Kidd in Shinobi world
    Power Strike
    Power Strike 2 (EU)
    Master of Darkness (EU)
    R-Type
    Ninja Gaiden (EU)
Captain Silver (EU version has more levels, US version got nerfed)
    Cloud Master
    Danan the Jungle Fighter (EU)
    Phantasy Star
    Golden Axe Warrior
    Rambo First Blood Part 2
    Spell Caster
    Kenseiden

^The one time that game was localized.

Speaking of which, there's also the first Ys(or does even action not count for RPGs?). Also, the original Wonder Boy, and a port of Wonder Boy in Monster Land.

I wonder if Dragon's Trap would be worth it if you would eventually go for Dragon's Curse on the TurboGrafx-16.

At first I shared the same sentiment about Genesis ports, but often times it's more like the dichotomy of Genesis/SNES with similarly titled games. That or they are the same game, but the layout of the stages are different, or something.

Never been big on the Ys games, personally. I know people who are nuts for them though.

I also forgot about the awesome Choplifter port that nobody brought up . I'll definitely be picking that up.

Thanks for all the suggestions, it's given me a lot to stew over probably for the next several months.

Glad to see I'm not the only one with love for this. I shucked out the cash for a Mark III converter solely to use for this and Hokuto No Ken.

Enduro Racer is a fast, smooth controlling, graphically pleasing early title that is one of those games that in comparison makes NES titles look like 2600 games. The Master System had more than its share of turds but I was always amazed when comparing quality SMS titles to NES ones released around the same time period, it's like daylight and dark. The above mentioned port of Choplifter has enough line scrolls to melt your eyes and I'm pretty sure it was a launch title or damn near close to it. Comparing things like it, Black Belt, Wonder Boy, Miracle World, and other very early 86-87 titles to NES releases around the same time and you'll find nothing even close visually.

The Ninja is another extremely cheap/common action game that plays like a top down run-and-gun with lots of colorful and varying environments.
