I'm counting how many games (not cartridges!) were released officially for the Mega Drive / Genesis anywhere in the world as I can't find any proper list that does so. There seems to be around 925 or 968 if you expand the definition of licensed and you restrict the definition of 'compilation'(see below).

- must be a game (not software) licensed by Sega (no taiwanese, Wisdom Tree, aftermarket games, but EA/Accolade counted as "retro-licensed")
- must be released in any region, no need for physical format (must be different enough from one region to another to count: see below). There are some difficult cases (software, etc.) I didn't count and some others that are included but at the beginning of the list for discussion.

You'll find here, all merged 925 games: US library: around 700 games + European exclusives + Japanese exclusives (including Mega Net games) + Brazilian, Korean & Australian exclusives (I don't consider Turma da Monica a distinct game):

I noticed Might & Magic III actually was not released, so removing it

I'm adding Outback Joey & Go Net (I started from the goodgen catalog for the list so that's why undumped games are not present), but not Game Tokoshan as I'm not adding neither Game Genie's, modems or even compilations (if the games were already released separately), all of which were officially released cartridges, but not games. That's why Art Alive! is so 50-50 for me: it was advertised as a game, you actually can do things with the pad without an external service or a second cartridge... but I reckon its consideration as a game is unclear, I'm counting it but putting at the end of the list.

So we are back to 899 games, a little less than what I was expecting (we always talk about 900+ or even 1000ish game catalog).

Regarding the J. League Pro Striker series, in 1993 there were J. League Pro Striker (aka J. League Pro Striker '93) and J. League Pro Striker Kanzenban (aka J. League Pro Striker Perfect). Although the latter was "just" a slightly tweaked, updated version of the former, they were released in Japan several months apart (and refelected a few changes during the '93/'94 soccer season), so I guess they may count as separate releases.

Yes that's why there are two reviews on Sega-16 (the 'perfect' variation was just published days ago, to my surprise). I personally think they are the same game, but it's another difficult case. As in some other sports games the next year iteration presents the same amount of changes (almost zero aside from roster update) but we are counting them as separate games, I think I'm following your recommendation and including J. League Perfect as a separate game (I'll be following Sega-16's site on this, also).

So there were 4 different J.League games after all ('final stage' being the best one by far and highly recommended, though not traslated).

Klax and Marble Madness are another two difficult cases (I'm assembling all those in the OP): there are two distinct versions developed by two distinct studios for the same game. Counting them as one game would be the equivalent of counting any HD, remastered game release as the same original game as one, which seems wrong.

This does not open the list to rereleases by other publishers (like classic series and whatnot) if the game was not substantially altered. Also variations of Mystic Defender etc still do just count as one game.

Please keep this going. Don't forget I'm not aiming to list all the official releases (this has been done tons of times) but to list actual games officially released (in other terms: approved by the makers of the console) in any country.

Updated the list with my hesitations at the beginning, also added two Jeopardy! games (Deluxe & Sports editions) and I put the names of the text adventures so the list is more readable: now 1 line = 1 game (easier to count, also).

I'm now at 904 games, does that sound right?

In that context none of us can tell you whether you are or aren't correct. If you're attempting to make some sort of "definitive" list, you might as well not bother because there is no fact, just a multitude of differing opinions.

I'm probably making the same mistake again, but what I'm trying to achieve is a somewhat consensual list, hence the hesitations (I have more straight opinions about Art Alive or Game Tokoshan, but I reckon there's space to debate, hence the hesitations in the way I put up this list).

In the end I'd like it to be a really useful list for someone looking for every damn game released for the system with all the 'crap' (ie a modem or a hacking cart mixed with the actual games).

Now, it's not going to be canon like lists that include every official commercial release in a country, since doing this worldwide is absolute nonsense in terms of accuracy, as I'm assuming games released in different regions with small title screen changes, etc. are the same release, which obviously isn't.

And I don't pretend to it to be definitive: being mostly based on goodgen, guardiana, etc there will always be new information that corrects previous assumptions (see the J.League example just above).

Of course my opinions will be there, but I want to listen other people here on interesting topics (at least for me) like if a game that was only playable with an accessory that no longer seems to work (modem) should be considered a game or not (I guess as long as it was played back then it is one).

Also I made this post specifically to hear about other specifications and maybe change my perception on the way.

"Nikkan Sports Pro Yakyuu Van" is another game that depends on the modem service to be played. I'm putting it at the beinning also, but it's still included.

Absolutely your Klaxes and your Marble Madnesses need their own entries as you suggest, and agreed about the Mystic Defender type situation where their is minor graphical changes from region to region (I think Risky Woods/Galahad/Evil God Draxos does this with the main sprite too).

But when you get to the Japanese exclusives side of things, how are you going to approach games like Bare Knuckle 3 and Splatterhouse Part 3, where the localization significantly altered play? Or Magical Hat which has completely different graphics and sound driver too, IIRC?

Yes ATM Klax & MM are counted as 4 games total, I think it's the right choice: different developers, etc.

From the ones you mention, my only concern would be Magical Hat / Decap Attack. I consider US SoR 3 a hack of BKIII, so it's still the same game, same developer, the code was originated at the same place at the same time (basically it's the same code), etc etc.

Now Decap Attack: I don't think it should count as a separate game. From the player POV (this is important to me for this list), it's a graphic hack (that alters storytelling etc like other localizations, or even gameplay -Contra, etc), but think of PAL Sonic 1: I master this game (played it extensively back then) and I suck at original Sonic 1, but this doesn't make it a different game: it's just altered gameplay because of external changes (ie 50Hz atrocity).

What I'm trying to say is that Magical Hat was not released where Decap Attack was, right? That's the most important argument to prove that it's the same game. Tough one, though. I'll add Decap Attack outside the list in the OP for the time being.

But feel free to name other confusing titles, it's interesting to think about what makes a game unique in regard of those terms.

EDIT: On the other side, I'm also thinking maybe Decap should be regarded as a different game based on the same engine, like Streets of Rage 1 VS Golden Axe (or many other examples), thus making it more a separate game. Now, some games reuse the exact same engine, but others tweak and add a lot of new elements to the engine itself, that's not the debate: in both cases the game could be considered to be different, separate. After all, '98 iterations of some EA sports game reused the same engine etc and updated (slightly) the graphics & rosters, so the changes there are MAYBE less than between Magical Hat & Decap Attack, but are still considered different ?

Now I'm more prone to include Decap as a separate game, but I haven't played neither of them enough time to make a judgement based on a players POV: that's the kind of input I need for this scenarios.
