Exclamation Problem contacting modder, idk what to do

Does anyone here know the member CathodeRayTubes? In the beginning of November, we made a deal for him to mod/restore my model 1 Genesis and model 2 Sega CD. His communication was perfect. I sent them to him, he got them. We were going back and forth through the entire month of November. I contacted him again on Dec 10 and didn't get a response. I tried again on the 14th and again no response. So I waited until Jan 4th and wrote him once more. Again, I didn't get any response.

I want to say first and foremost, I DO NOT THINK HE IS A SCAMMER. I am NOT accusing him of doing anything wrong. His communication was 100% through November and he seems totally legit through my dealings with him and his activity on the forum.

At this point, I think something may be very wrong. Idk if he crashed his car or what, but I'm thinking something happened because he was responding to every email, then silence.

I just want to know if anyone can help me get in touch with him or find out what has happened. I really am at a loss for what to do.

Today I realized there was a phone number listed with the paypal transaction. I just called it and it's out of service.

I just want to know what's going on. Whatever is going on, he does have my stuff.

    Here's a link to his website: http://www.retrogaming-mods.com/

The last I heard from him was on Nov 29th.

Dude, that sucks! Sounds fishy. Have you tried contacting Paypal to see if they can get a response from him? I don't know what could be done otherwise without making it a legal matter.

I just emailed him an ultimatum. He has until 2:00 EST on Jan 16 to let me know he's still breathing and doing the mods for me, or I contact paypal. Can they do anything to help me if I need them to? I originally sent him money on Nov 8 and Nov 16.

You paid him money labeled as "Goods and Services", right? If that's the case, I'm sure Paypal can get involved. They could probably at least get your money refunded, but you'll have to see if they have ways to contact the modder to get your stuff back. I doubt that a disaster happened with the modder, but Paypal should be able to contact someone at that residence.

It looks like you've already made several attempts to contact this supposed modder. I would suggest to go ahead and contact Paypal. You've already allowed sufficient time for him to respond.

Oddly there's no WHOIS information for his site. Do you know his real name? Might be worth checking Facebook -- or, at the risk of sounding ghoulish, the obituaries in his area.

Ok, I checked the North Las Vegas NV obituaries. He wasn't listed.

Checked facebook, only one person with his name in North Las Vegas showed up, but I don't think it's him.

Fuck it, should I call the police there? Paypal says this all happened too long ago to open a dispute. So I emailed them directly and explained my problem. That's the thing though, things like console mods could easily take more than 45 days, especially if the modder has a life outside of it.

EDIT: If my systems really are gone, does anyone have a spare model 1 Genesis and model 2 SCD they'd be willing to part with And would someone want to mod them who won't fall off the face of the earth?

@zetastrike: sorry to hear about your possible lost . I'm trading my setup here: http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthr...ltibios-System Can get you a model 1 to go with it instead.

I'm looking for around 7 NES core systems in any condition as long as the boards work, can be chipped off, missing doors, yellowed, cracked, blinking, etc. ( I just lost an Ebay auction with these many units that went for $66+sh) maybe you have some in your stash for a trade.LMK.

I also have an extra Model 1 Genesis, either VA6.8 or VA7 with no HDG logo. It might need some work. I could probably refurbish the casing and edge connectors for you, but I haven't yet tried a cap kit for the old Genesis. Might be willing to test my luck on a cap kit for it, but no guarantees there. I might be able to find you a Model 2 if you're into that.

    So here's my console situation:

I may have lost my VA6 model 1, but I still have my VA4 model 2. Are those able to be region switched, overclocked, AV, s-video, and component modded?

I may have lost my Sega CD. I'll have to see what I can do about that. I'm interested in Segaedge's multibios unit.

I'm thinking about calling the N Las Vegas police tomorrow.

His ebay account is 100% positive and the guy seems to have been on it for quite some time:

I'm really curious to know what really happened here because I really doubt this guy was a scammer.

His last posts/activity on other forums also are around 20th November:

It also seems that he had recently registered his website domain (October 2014) and he seems to have payed it for a full year:

It sucks that it happened to you zetastrike, of all people. But I still believe that you'll end up getting your systems back.

I was actually looking at his ebay account earlier today. FWIW if you scrutinize his ebay profile, you will see that it states that he is no longer a registered user:

Do you guys think I'm overreacting? If he ends up surfacing after all this and is pissed off at me, I don't think I acted in the wrong. I don't think it's good practice to ignore your customer for over a month when they put their faith in you.

And if it was just a Genesis, I wouldn't be nearly as angry. It's the thought of losing the SCD that upsets me.

No you are not overreacting. If I was in the position of possessing something that belongs to you, I would make sure to maintain communication. Even if he says he was out of town, it is HIS responsibility to notify you before he makes the trip.

In the worse case scenario, let us say that he got into a car accident or was admitted to the hospital. And let us say that you went ahead with filing a police report or requested a chargeback through your bank or some other means. If he had one iota of common sense, he would put himself in your situation and understand why you proceeded in the direction you did.

Now go ahead and kick him square in the penis!
