Default Thank you for letting me know Sega-16 someone tried to hack into my account.

Why the fk someone would want to is beyond me.

    Their ip address is

    119.188.94.145

Looks like some fker from China, trying to steal my national secretz.

    That's a hot IP.

What do you mean? Did someone attempt a change password request?

    I received an email today.

"Someone tried to login into your account with an incorrect password 5 times. This person has been prevented from attempting to login to your account for the next 15 minutes"

Maybe they think I have F35 secrets (since China hacked into an Australian server and pinched some F35 info). I can tell them for free it is a POS.

Interesting. I got a similar mail yesterday:

    "Dear Phantar,

Someone has tried to log into your account on Sega-16 Forums with an incorrect password at least 5 times. This person has been prevented from attempting to login to your account for the next 15 minutes.

The person trying to log into your account had the following IP address: 183.207.228.22

    All the best,
    Sega-16 Forums"

So pretty much the same. IP is different, but it's also pointing to China (Beijing in my case, to be precise).

Is there a concentrated chinese effort of hacking into these forums going on?

Just got the same email yesterday.

    The IP. was : 183.207.228.51

Question I have is if they are successful in breaching an account, what would they even do?

It would just be easier to make their own account honestly.

Well, there are actually several possible reasons behind such a "hacking" attempt: One, once somebody has successfully infiltrated the account, he might try gathering additional data, like for example the email address saved in the profile settings. Two, he might send fraudulent private messages akin to the "Spanish Prisoner Scam" (sending a private message to people you've sent PMs to before with contents like "Help, I'm stuck in a foreign country and my money and passport have been stolen, please wire me some money via Western Union!"). And three, the reasoning behind such an attack might be that a user might use the same password he needs to access the forums for other accounts as well, like for example Email and Facebook. So, having successfully hacked a forum account might increase the chance of accessing email and facebook adresses as well.

Granted, it seems like a very plump attempt, but you'd be surprised how often this stuff actually happens. Just another reason why one should use different and safe passwords for every single account in use.

The most likely explanation is that it's a bot that just systematically tries to hijack forum accounts in order to spam. The China origin means nothing since it's common to route such stuff through Chinese servers. I wouldn't worry about it too much, unless your password is "password" or something.
