I noticed a lot of the spambots who seem to lurk around are simply putting their URLs in their profiles...

... maybe try honeypotting them with an auto-nuke+IP ban if a spambot tries inserting URLs in their profile page or in private messages pre-approval?

Obviously, put some kind of message there below the homepage form stating the fact like "Only fill this box out if you find search engine optimisation tools very arousing." (avoid words like bot, banned, spammer, etc - basically anything that will make it obvious that they shouldn't fill the form out but would be obvious to humans in the same sort of way I wrote that there)
