    Ninja Ninja Gaiden (Master System)

    Sega fans had the Shinobi series, and there were always comparisons between it and Ninja Gaiden on the NES. While both are great, Sega fans actually got the better end of the deal. Ninja Gaiden made appearances on the PAL Master System and on the Game Gear. The MS version is as good as you'd expect and well worth tracking down. Read our full review for more details.

    Thanks for the review Melf. The SMS Ninja Gaiden needs more exposure. It's definitely worth importing. A gem of a game indeed.

    I can't remember why i never got into this version. i think it reminded me too much of the shinobi games on the game gear. I should go back and try it. good review!

    I like this game, but i'd rather play the NES version.

    One of my favorite games on the Master System. One of the only things that bugs me is the item limit glitch. For those that don't know if you get your ammo to 99 it gets stuck there and you have infinite item use. This turns the game into a joke so there's really no challenge to it unless you play sword only or consciously try not to over-fill your ammo which is hard because unlike the NES games it's very generous with item drops.

    That polish-related quibble aside it's an excellent platformer that's not as punishing as it's counterparts.

    Totally different games altogether. Comparing "versions" here is pretty much pointless.

    To my eyes, this is actually a Ninja Gaiden IV of sorts.

    "Ninja Gaiden" is the name of the series and title of the original arcade game. The SMS version is an original game and not a port of anything.

    Released in Europe, Australia and Brazil in 1992 for the Master System, this game has similar gameplay mechanics to the NES games
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninja_Gaiden

    Both Nes and SMS NG are hack and slash games. Anyway:

    Arcade have a version;
    Nes have a version;
    SMS have a version

    I guess the Nes version better.

    It says "NES games", in plural. So, comparing Ninja Gaiden for the NES with Ninja Gaiden for the Master System is the same as comparing either of them or both of them with Ninja Gaiden II and/or Ninja Gaiden III. They are unrelated games from the same series only sharing similar gameplay mechanics. This is why I regard this game as a Ninja Gaiden IV of sorts, and not a counterpart of the NES version of Ninja Gaiden because it clearly isn't.

    According to your reasoning, the Xbox also has a "version" and you should add it too.

    I feel the same way. It's not a different version of Ninja Gaiden. It's another game in the Ninja Gaiden franchise.
