PGA III is based on PGA II's engine but with digitized graphics for the golfers. The advantage with that is that it's fast, although it doesn't simulate the elevation of the terrain. PGA 96 wasn't bad but it was perhaps pushing the system too hard. The slow screen redraw took away a lot of the immediacy from the game (as well as the automatic reverse angle view), and the graphics suffered from the colour limitations of the system. Also, IIRC the digitized sprites looked worse than PGA III's and, most importantly, the low resolution of the putting contour overlay made putting quite difficult.

For its faults, and I admit to being massively disappointed with it back in the day, PGA 96 was a brave attempt at producing a 16-bit version of a 32-bit golf game with only a few sacrifices.

Ah okay, that was my next question, whether PGAIII had the slow redraw stuff. I will have to get PGAIII right away. I can't wait to play it. I noticed that in PGA '96 it had the lay change, for example, the angle of the ground changed the way you should hit the ball, and I had ball control, like spin and back spin. Is that also in PGAIII?

Man, I really am getting into the Genesis golf library, it's surprisingly solid. What a fun experience.

I need to get on that Chi Chi's... (lulz) It looks good/fun. I love faster paced golf games. I just wish Sega would have done their own Mario Golf style game, with the RPG elements from Shining Force. It just seems like it would have fit really well. I can imagine the "Yes" and "No' head wiggles now...

Thanks again everyone for your suggestions, this is turning out to be a really fun and interesting collecting side-hobby. I really don't mind owning all the golf games, it would be fun to get them all and have all the different flavors of golf. It also really puts into perspective how much, and how little golf games have grown.

    -Jorge!

IIRC, the game takes into account the ground the ball is on and how it is lying (e.g. fairway, rough, sand, and how deep it's buried if on sand), but the ground is completely flat everywhere. The only exception is the putting green, which gets its own 3D grid to look at.

Pebble Beach Golf Links is the only one I play.
I also agree with the Neo Turf Masters being the best of the time.

I picked up PGAIII and Chi Chi's. PGAIII is really nice, Chi Chi's is...Interesting. I'm still glad I got it though. I'll probably make PGAIII the main golf game, along with Pebble Beach and bit of Arnold and Chi Chi's sprinkled in.

Have you beaten it? If so, any tips, or any word on what's needed to get an ending?

I updated the golf game list, for future reference. As an added note, I mostly play PGA III. That game is really good. Highly recommended.

Yep, PGA III FTW--it gets my top vote on the Genesis.

We should add in the opening post also:

    - Top Pro Golf as import ( its successor, Top Pro Golf 2, is Chi chi's Pro Challenge)
    - Devil's Course 3D Golf
    - World Class Leaderboard

We had tons of options on MegaDrive for golf games!

Agreed. It looks like I sang its praises here back when the thread started, and I stand by it, PGA Tour III is excellent. I think it's one of the best golf games ever made, and still pop it in from time to time.

And for those who haven't played Neo Turf Masters on the Neo Geo, you're really missing out. Nowadays it can be played without Neo hardware on the PS2/Wii compilation SNK Arcade Classics and as a downloadable title on Xbox Live, and presumably the Playstation Store as well, although I cannot confirm the latter off hand.

Battle Golfer Yui finally got that fan translation. Goati rates it very, very highly! I guess the story is bonkers, and the gameplay quite good.
