Default Making a PAL Mega CD region free?

So, I'm in the market for a Model 1 European Mega CD and I was wondering if there's a way of making it able to read games from any region? I currently own a Model 1 Pal Mega Drive with a 50-60HZ mod switch which allows me to play games from any region.

Is such a mod possible on the Mega CD too?

You need either a region free BIOS (the 'Japanese' version has the highest compatibility) or a multi BIOS with its own switch. There is a thread on the boards somewhere I posted in a lot when I was having mine modded.

Or one of the many region-free carts made for this. See bottom posts in this thread: http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthr...tibility/page2

Also, there is a program I used years ago called SegaCDConv or ConvSegaCD which will change regions in the ISO file if you dump your disc. You convert it and then burn it to a CDR. Basically there are a ton of ways to do this now.

Yes I forgot, the MED flashcart works too. Although not for some 32X CD titles, I tried Night Trap 32X and it hung at the logo screen.

Region patching games would be the most convenient bet if you don't mind running backups; but be sure to buy good ones. Ignore brand names, they are meaningless as each company uses one of about four manufacturers and slaps their own label on. Taiyo Yuden are about the best all rounders from what I found and work very well.

Yes Taiyo are the absolute best. My CDX laser struggles so much less with them. With how cheap they are now there is no reason to use anything else.
Region patching is not perfect though - I could never get Devastator to run that way. Most stuff works though.

Yeah, region patching and even with using an everdrive to load another region's bios it is not 100% foolproof on all games. That said, I have had pretty good luck with most titles using a bios loaded from the MegaED, even playing PAL titles on my US units.

I used to load a region-free BIOS from my Everdrive when using my European Mega CD II, but it turned out to be a crapshoot with certain games (Ninja Warriors and Night Striker in particular). I wound up programming an EPROM with l_oliviera's region-free BIOS, swapped out the original BIOS ROM with it and it's been working great ever since.
