Default Sonic CD - Soundtrack Battle: Japanese vs American!

A sequel to my old thread: http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthr...Original-vs-US!

Been playing lots of Sonic CD of late, and been swapping between both soundtracks, so I'd thought I'd ask the good folks over here which version they like the most.

    Original/Japanese/European

    ----- OR -----

    Special Edition/American

JP all day every day. I even made a point of buying the JP version several years back for the different/better soundtrack.

There are some exceptions, though. I would easily choose Sonic Boom over Toot Toot-whatever; that rap/rock hybrid stuff just sounds completely out of place given the rest of the soundtrack. I also prefer Tidal Tempest Bad Future and Quartz Quadrant BF on the US version. Stardust Speedway Present has me leaning toward US, but just for that one part. You know, that part.

I think the Past tunes are usually my favorites from each level, though.

US soundtrack was rushed and it shows, to be honest. Seems more effort was put into some tracks than others.

If you could take some of the tracks of the JP and the US versions and mix them in the game it would be a perfect soundtrack.

The JP version wins out in every zone except Wacky Workbench, which is too repetitive and bland in comparison to the nice NA song. The JP music feels more Sonic-y. Much of the NA music sounds like generic 90s stock rock music. Not much personality. I'd also consider Stardust Speedway a draw, but the JP good future is probably my favorite track in the game. It's annoying that even if you achieve a good future, it always plays the bad future song when you race metal sonic. Before I had a real copy of the JP version, I used a burned copy of the NA version, but with the JP soundtrack swapped in. The cool part was that in SS GF, it stayed on that song during the battle. It's kind of a weird thing for SoA to go in and change when they localized it.

No, it's unbiased analysis. The only fanboyism is people who claim that Hyperstone Heist and Bloodlines are actually as good as their SNES counterparts.

for me both are good, each version have its own style and some music fit better on some level than others

Like the Japanese version of Tidal Tempest fit more than the US version (but the US one is still good, just not as good as the original)
Or the US version of Stardust Speedway and the special stage one fit better than the JP one

I have Sonic CD from the PlayStation network and I must say it's nice to have both, as well as widescreen graphics thanks to Christian Whitehead's Retro Engine. Sometimes I play it with the Japan soundtrack than other times US music using my much liked Hyperkin GN6 USB pad.

I don't think the JP soundtrack is perfect, but as others have said before it (usually) fits better with what Sonic is all about.

The cart soundtracks are still better than anything from Sonic CD IMO.

I think the JP soundtrack is more coherent in its style and themes.
The US soundtrack, while sporting several very good tracks, feels disjointed with little to no relation between the Present, Good and Bad Future themes.

    This for me as well.
In general I prefer the majority of the JP soundtrack. But there are some REALLY great tracks on the US version.

JP soundtrack fits the game 16-bit abstract acid style better. US one sounds like something from a ps1 game. Like Crash Bandicoot or something.

The original. Firstly because the chiptune tracks weren't rewritten in the US version, leading to a musical mismatch between the past tracks and the rest. Secondly, I freaking hate "Sonic Boom": it's low energy, wishy-washy, soft rock/pop crap. Thirdly, I just prefer the Japanese tracks; they're more interesting.
