Sorry if this has been covered but will the the Mark III FM Sound Unit work with a U.S. Master System? I figured it would be easier to set up than the mod I have seen.

A Sega Mark III SMS with built-in FM sound can be bought for a comparable price or less. SMS-to-Mark III cart converters are cheap.

Mark III doesn't have built in FM Sound, Japanese SMS do have it built in though. Mark III FM Sound Unit isn't compatible with SMS.

Master System has a different expansion port. If the FM sound unit or anything else still works there they'd need to be modified.
The Japanese SMS will play normal SG-1000 games, unlike western versions, but can't be officially used as a computer. No way to plug in the keyboard/etc.
SMS also has the benefit of easier RGB. An FM unit doesn't pass through RGB.
