Been playing again today. Linkuei's hack gives all the more reasons to slag Ballistic off: a tweak like his that allows us to have a reasonable life bar depletion was all that was needed to turn this unplayable turd of a version into a fairly competent port of a microcomputer classic. Goes to show that playability is ALL.
Still, Turrican will always be better on the C64 and the Amiga, of course.

At the moment we still have nothing, but I reckon the idea of fully reworking both Turrican and Universal Soldier (Turrican II) has to be very promising at least. Especially when the latter of them is covered. Sadly, I still haven't been able to restore anything further back from Turrican II in Universal Soldier, and I doubt I ever will.

I have always been puzzled by the fact of the Turrican series enjoying a quite healthy homebrew development community since long, yet the Mega Drive versions (and obviously excluding Mega Turrican as that's perfect already) being largely ignored up to this point, bar a couple of small fixes and the color hack by Linkuei.

It's awesome to hear that someone's actually working on something like this. I share your puzzlement at the apparent lack of interest in wanting to see the Turrican trilogy in a more proper form on the console that has the most games from the series in one spot.

It's bummer that you couldn't get any further on your T2 restoration. The changes you shared made such a big difference.

What I mostly did was reverting the Universal Soldier sprite back to Bren McGuire. Had to do the sprite swap with all his animations which are a lot, especially covering the lightning whip attack, but couldn't do anything else (other than a couple of small cosmetic changes in the Alien Hive levels escenery, basically the alien heads had been covered to make them like they aren't alien heads but something else), because of compressed graphics I couldn't break anyhow due to my limited skills, sadly.

This ambicious project sounds on paper like aiming to rewrite both games taking the game logic basis of both existing Mega Drive versions, so they aren't done totally from scratch. If that's the case, obviously the results will be much more noticeable in Universal Soldier/Turrican II, not only because of all the graphic changes, also because maybe there's a chance he could restore the missing/replaced shoot 'em up levels too (I couldn't have brought those back in a million years). But regarding the first Turrican game conversion which wasn't that modified, there's also the possibility of some polishments like bringing back things like the original title screen flow and especially the original ending/credits screen which was left in a barebone state in the Mega Drive state. I'm also curious about what he's going to do with the music, if he's planning to do something with that at all.

At this moment this is all mere gossip, but one can hope big things from this.

Some sound fixing has been done, check it out here:

With this hack combined with Linkuei's, Turrican MD is getting better.

This actually comes from the person behind the Turrican MDRR project, and his intention seems to be making the Mega Drive versions of the first two Turrican games much better than they currently are.

I cannot overstate how much of an improvement the rom hacks available are for MD Turrican.
Iíve been spending a lot of time with the Turrican games via Turrican Flashback on PS4.
And after playing the patched MD version, I am enjoying it almost as much as the Amiga version on flashback, also good to hear the MDís FM chip kick some tunes.
Donít bother with the original get the parched/hacked version on your flash cart and enjoy this game !
