Sonic The Many Faces of Genesis: The CDX

We've all seen them on eBay and around the Web, and some have spent a pretty penny to own the Genesis CDX. Small, sleek, and downright sexy, for many it's the ultimate way to play your 16-bit games. But is this something you should be tracking down and spending your hard-earned cash on? Read our full report and see if this is the console variation for you!

I had a CDX for some years until I had to sell it off earlier this year. I hardly used it and It was pointless to own given that I already have a Genesis 1+CD and a JVC X'Eye.

Just a bit of FYI: The CDX came out before the 32X.

Well sure as hell that thing is sexy, What a hot piece of machinery.... but it doesn't work with Radical Rex!!!!!! It doesn't even exist in my eyes now!

That was indeed a great read. I think it would be nice to mention the special AC adaptor it used, around the lines where you mention how much the CDX goes for a loose one. Also, I can't find any info on a Japanese version, but it was released in Brazil as the Multi-Mega CDX.

It does have that special AC adapter, although currently I'm using a mode 2 adapter in mine because my other broke. Been working great so far!

Thanks for the comments guys! =)

I'm a proud owner of a CDX myself. More than anything, it does great in cramped spaces, though using the Game Genie with some non-US games makes it look like the typical Genesis cartridge is awkwardly tall. That was one comment someone once made when he saw mine with a copy of Curse + Game Genie plugged in.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no Japanese version of the CDX; it is a US/EU release.

Three years ago, when I got my CDX, I paid US$60 for it, in relatively good condition (few marks).

Great article! The CDX is a neat little thing but my dream all-in-one sega system is one of those Sega-branded Wondermega's they made a few of in Japan. Awesome looking system and with S-Video output already on the back, you can't go wrong.

The CD-X does not have S-video.

yeah, good article. Oddly enough, while going through a box of video games at my firend's house a few months back, we found the manual for the Sega CDX. I asked him if he ever owned one but he said 'no.' We have no idea where the manual came from then haha.

It certainly is a very small little console, but I'm happy with my x'eye haha.

I have one and am very happy with it. It is one amazing little system! Is it just me or do Cobra Command and Road Avenger freeze up in the middle of gameplay? I want to complete these 2 FMVs. They are more fun than Dragon's Lair and Space Ace!

If the CDX was the "last ditch effort by Sega to stimulate some interest in its Sega CD format", it certainly worked for me. I bought it shortly after it came out and it was my first Sega-CD system.

As for the "tedious process is required to get them to function properly" with the 32X, I shoved the 32X in the cartridge slot, connected the wires and never had any problems playing 32X games.

I also didn't having any trouble playing Terminator CD on it back in the day either.

Maybe I just had a special CDX.
