    Realtime rotation of the sprite pixels themselves? It's not going to look any better than the pre-rendered of the same angles, and it would be a waste - and it's going to slowdown the game to do it (at least on single pixel resolution it is). You could literally rotate them on the processor, as a background process, leading up to the boss.. and just used those pre-rendered frames. Genesis has the ram for it.

    They're all handdrawn sprites in 11.25 steps (which actually sticks out a lot in places with slow motion). Though because of symmetry it means it only needs 5 sprites per rotating piece instead of 16 (since the rest can be done with flipping).

    The Genesis can flip horizontal and/or vertical, right? Wouldn't that need 8 sprites per since they're asymmetrical in this example? I'm curious how it can be done with 5. Maybe I'm missing something obvious.

    Oh whoops good call, the big sprites of the arms are asymmetrical (though the other parts do seem to be symmetrical enough to get away with it, and the round ones outright don't rotate at all). Mixed bag, I guess.

    I pic these gifs from gameplay videos at 60 fps for maximum faithfulness.

    Here is the boss at 1/4 speed

    As stated by Sik, you can see that the circular sprites in the center are clearly pre-rendered, but the wing and tail sprites seem to be doing something else


    This guy head at 1/4 speed it's a very cool rotational move
