Rewatched Angel Cop recently and showed it to a friend who had never seen it and bloody loved it. I swear that 80's/early 90's anime has a style, quality and visceral punch that is lacking in a lot of modern anime, but maybe that's just me. I'm not just talking about gore and tentacle rape either lol, there was just a certain style to the animation, even some of the low budget stuff, that was sheer art.
Now I know I'm not just imagining it because you're obviously very knowledgeable on the subject. I always liked the 90's Street Fighter II anime, did you? I used to have that on VHS and watched the hell out of it. The vicious fight between Vega and Chun Li was some epic awesomeness.
Didn't see it until years later. First thing I ever saw was Akira at someone else's house. Then a kid brought Ninja Scroll to school, I borrowed it. Loved it. I rented Ghost in the Shell from Blockbuster. I was already a fan of 80s gory horror films so while I did not grasp the mature stories in anime then. I loved the gore. I later appreciated them for story and art and such.
