Default Revenge of Shinobi VS Shinobi III VS Shadow Dancer

Okay there is a topic about that already.

But I'm interested to see the results in a poll.

    So, let's vote!
My Top20 Sega Genesis Soundtrack (It is no longer updated, but it is the only video I made! And it's game by game, not track by track. You can play blindtest.)

Had to vote for Revenge. Shadow Dancer MD would follow closely, III a distant third to my tastes.

The freedom of movement, speed and having less trial & error makes 3 the winner for me. It does have too many auto-scrolling segments though and the sound design is a bit worse than in Revenge.

My preference from best to least great:

    Shinobi III
    Shadow Dancer
    RoS

Why not all three though. But if I had to choose 3 probably is my least favorite, the moves are fantastic but the level design is quite improvable, autoscrollers especially felt like plain filler.

Shinobi III feels more polished to me.

Revenge of Shinobi for me based on three things: playability, nostalgia and music. I love Shinobi III as well but it's a very different type of game to me. I also like Shadow Dancer but I'm not a fan of the 'one hit and your dead' life system in that game.

ROS gets my vote. Musashi has a weight to his jumps that's missing from III, and the level design takes full advantage of the moveset/mobility whilst III is left wanting in that regard. Shadow Dancer is the perfect accompaniment to ROS as the true sequel to the arcade original and is pure lean, mean arcade style action and would come in at second place for me.

Nothing touches the ROS soundtrack either, which in my opinion is one of the most iconic 16-bit soundtracks of all time, despite the quality of the other two.

There's just something supremely badass in the atmosphere of these games that will never be captured again, no matter how hard they might try in the future to recreate it. You could say the same about a lot of Japanese games of the era, but the MD Shinobis are just exemplary in that regard IMO. The locations, music, enemies, all of it. That point in time where JP devs were inspired by, and indeed trying to appeal to a western market just hits the sweet spot with me.

shadow dancer, i enjoyed the mechanics with the dog more and the levels. RoS is a great game, but for me a little stiff. Part 3 has a great move set but boring levels (to me).

Shadow dancer could use some hits per life instead of insta-death. That's why it's number 3 for me.

My personal favorite is Revenge of Shinobi, but for purely nostalgic reasons. Shinobi 3 is by far the best game in the series IMO. It just plays better all around.

I love them all, but Revenge is my favorite. The title screen, the soundtrack, but especially those iconic bosses. I get a smile on my face every time I face off against Arnold-Hulk-Terminator and Godzilla. I have the original cart which has the unlicensed bosses, Batman too.
