Neogeo SNK returning to hardware. A next Gen Neo Geo console

SNK will soon announce a new Neo Geo hardware, the company teased.

“A next-gen Neo Geo hardware is coming after Neo Geo Mini,” the company said in a tweet. “With a modern design and a wonderful play feeling, and you can even link it to Neo Geo Mini, the new hardware will provide you a Neo Geo journey that you have never experienced.”

The Japanese version of this tweet reads a bit differently, stating, “Following Neo Geo Mini, a new Neo Geo hardware will appear. With leading-edge design, excellent play feel, and linkability to Neo Geo Mini, it will offer a Neo Geo experience like no other. Details will be announced soon. Please look forward to it.”

This new hardware may be related to the Neo Geo versions 2 and 3 SNK said were in planning back in April.

    Stay tuned.

It sounds like another Neo Geo system using emulation of the old hardware. We'll see.
A Black Falcon: no, computer games and video games are NOT the same thing. Video games are on consoles, computer games are on PC. The two kinds of games are different, and have significantly different design styles, distribution methods, and game genre selections. Computer gaming and console (video) gaming are NOT the same thing."

Clearly they are developing cutting edge hardware so they can digitally release their new 3D KOF/Samurai Shodown games on it,
and they'll use the same hardware in their new upcoming arcade cabinets! and we'll get new 3D Metal Slugs and Last Blades and Garou 2 and AOF4!
The future is looking bright! I would totally buy a new system like that, imagine turning it on and getting weekly new info on production of their new games directly in your menu!

neh, its gonna be an emu box where you can buy their old romz

Unless they are doing an Amico or Atari VCS

This bodes not well. This is not an era in which custom hardware is a profitable venture.
    - Where it's always 1992 (or so).
    Youtube - Terminated
    BitChute - Fragmented, but functional

I wonder what they're gonna do with the Neo Geo Mini, seeing as they mention it can link to it…

At a guess , maybe you can use it as an extra controller and screen and also maybe all the games on the Mini can be shared to the new console

This is a terrible idea. The Neo*Geo mini was already awful.

Well, I suppose they can't go any lower.

I can't imagine they have the resources to make a PS5 like a device. So yeah has to be either some retro device again or they are making something like Amico or that new Atari VCS and I doubt either of those do well.

Maybe they're borrowing that new Intellivision video chip ;P (they'd have a better use for it, honestly…)

But yeah, more likely that it's just glorified PC hardware. Arcades have been like that for a while after all (I won't say consoles because those have wildly different memory setups than how PC works despite otherwise similar components)

I could imagine 2 refers to the home version, and 3 to the arcade counter part. Semi open most likely means its a digital platform also supporting cart games. Since they still have the chinese chicken food money keeping them afloat, this could potentially be good. Wouldn't hold my breath though. Also even if you hate the mini, financially it was a decent success for them.

    I don't expect anything substantial.
I'm expecting either an ARM-based chipset, or something based on PC infrastructure. The excitement in hardware design died when the Wii U did.
