Default Megadrive gamepad with shoulder buttons?

I am looking for a pad with L and R buttons but I am not sure which models actually have them.

segaretro.org lists many third party controllers and I've managed to spot one or two which could be useful.

However, I don't know how those shoulder buttons work. I mean, do they mirror other buttons?, can they be programmed? or are they reserved for special features?

I was hoping I could hack such a controller and make the shoulder buttons work as "up" and "down" to play some driving games with manual transmission usually assigned to those directions.

    Default

The AsciiPad SG-6 is similar to the SNES pad, but has ABXY on the front, with C and Z being the (tiny) shoulder buttons. Turbo fire select switches are available for each individual button.
    - Where it's always 1992 (or so).
    Youtube - Terminated
    BitChute - Fragmented, but functional
