Default Ishido: Way of the Stones

Sometimes, a puzzler just isn't fun no matter how you slice it. The Genesis is pretty well taken care of in this regard, but some of the earlier entries in the genre don't hold up. Ishido: Way of the Stones is one game that staff writer Andrew Pine just couldn't get into, and he's got a full review to share about his experience. Read on and see if Accolade's puzzler is one you should avoid.

And the best part is that this will only work on the first Model 1s (since it wasn't licensed by Sega).

Let me just say to anyone risking playing Ishido just dont. There are far better games for the Genesis.

you CAN play that crap on newer systems, but you need the ROM and Flashcart, and use my TMSS patching proggy (available on my site's MD section)

Bearing all that in mind you don't want to play this game, it sucks so badly it will make your head hurt

I like Ishido and think the review is overly harsh, but the game still wouldn't merit more than a 3 due to the extremely poor presentation. It still plays a nice game of Ishido, and the control and game is rather intuitive and user friendly. Graphics are fine but could use more variety. Soundtrack is non-existant as are game modes, high score system, etc. which really should be included and helped the game.

Not every puzzle game needs to be a "stuff in a well" design. There's always a place for games like Ishido, Shanghai, Othello, and other puzzle game types. I think it'd make for a great Nomad game, at least back in the day, and I bet the tiles are quite readable since they lack complex kanji to decipher before making a move.

Honestly, I believe if you have even ONE nice thing to say about a game, it gets a 2 automatically.

    That's just me though.

In which case I'd still give Ishido a one. Even Junction was at least good as a relaxant/trance inducer.

I got Ishido free when I bought my ARP2. I never had the patience to play it long enough to even understand it.

    I caught that.....

Still, I believe he mentioned something about liking the music a little, which would mean maybe a 1.25.

But we're not doing decimal points here.

(I still think we should go to a 5-star rating system, BTW.)

Using 5 points only seems to create more confusion, since anything a 3-5 seems ok, and doesn't leave much room for in between points, if we'd still stray from decimal points in a 5 start system.

Thats the first review here I didnt enjoy. Why do you even bother reviewing a game, when you dont like "horrendously boring Asian tile games"? Its like saying that a chess game sucks when you hate playing chess. Thats not an objective point of view but bias.
Im not saying that this game is good because it isnt but its not a 1 out of 10. Crap like Bible Adventures is. Somehow I get the impression that you just wanted to give a game a 1 and make fun of it.
Your Turrican review was way better.

I have never heard of that game and seemingly this is no bad thing.

Because Accolade didn't have a Sega license for this game, I decided to steal the game by downloading the ROM to make them lose profit. After two games of testing, I think it is worth at least a four. A nice rainy day game that enhances your Brain Power.
