Crazy how many playstyles they tried to incorporate into that. Them flying around in that skiff thing looked really impressive.

The flying machine pseudo 3D stage is the only impressive part, I wonder if you could use that in games with heavy number of things on screen keeping the framerate. It's not the same trick used in Batman and Robin, or is it?

It's all over the place. No wonder it failed. But at least it didn't try to be yet another boring platformer.

The game design seems to have gotten sidetracked on "how much can we fit in" instead of "how can we make a fun game". None of the individual parts seem to be particularly inspired in their design. The cut scene animation is good, though.

While admittedly I also can't see it faring that well (especially the bike levels would stick out), it seems that it got killed because THQ just didn't care about it:

Back at THQ, the situation had turned for the worse. The heads of THQ were not interested in Akira in the slightest, and pushed other projects onto Larry. Mr. Siegel would try his best in nearly every meeting to get more attention for Akira, but was dismissed every time. By mid-November 1994, the project came to a close. Larry left THQ in 1995, fed up with the way they had treated him and his team.

Who knows, maybe THQ would have cared more if the game looked good and was ready to be shipped. The development spanned over a year, which was enough to finish your average game back then, but it looks like that one was nowhere near finished. That said, I guess they must have made some progress after that prototype was made, since they had a couple more months to work on it before the project was abandoned, from what I understood.

Is it possible this proto is done the way it is because they hadn't yet decided on the actual genre to use and so this was made to test out some possibilities? Although not unique genre wise, I think it would have played better as just the side scrolling platformer taking place in some of the locations from the movie using the road rash like cycle segments between those levels. Although the 3D like parallax level is pretty impressive to see. So yeah couldn't this demo just be different proof of concepts for some higher ups to actually decide on what they wanted done?

I think it's probably too developed for a mock-up. Unless they had the most leisurely development environment ever.

It's a prototype using unfinalised assets clearly! But what's shown is using the MDs hardware features to good effect not sure why people are being so harsh on it.

Artistically/stylistically it doesn't look great and doesn't make good use of the hardware's color capabilities. The designs of some of the modes/stages seem to be poorly thought out from a gameplay perspective. It looks like an overly ambitious fan game where someone bit off way more than they can chew.

It's just a prototype, but it's not surprising that sone people are underwhelmed by it.

Exactly. It's a fine tech demo, but it wasn't meant to be one.

Adventures of Batman and Robin was also a tech demo but complete and enjoyable.

Feels like that's what this game was trying to go for. Showing the hardware's strength while trying to make a game at the same time but didn't know what the hell would stick for an Akira game.

Should have just been some sort of Contra/Road Rush combo.
