    Default Sega Lord X - Top 10 32x Games (& Your Favorites)

Sega Lord X released a video of his top 10 32x games:

He's got some pretty good selections, and I enjoyed the video, but my picks are a bit different. I had the 32x during its original run, and will always have a soft spot for the ill-fated add-on, despite the fact that I was severely disappointed when Sega pulled the plug on it so quickly. But there was that brief, shining moment in time when I was the only one able to play Doom on my television, and was the envy of the 6th grade.

Thinking it over, here are my 10 favorites on the 32x:

    1. Virtua Racing Deluxe
    2. After Burner Complete
    3. Star Trek Star Fleet Academy
    4. Shadow Squadron
    5. Space Harrier
    6. NBA Jam: Tournament Edition
    7. 36 Great Holes Starring Fred Couples
    8. Zaxxon's Mother Base 2000
    9. WWF Wrestlemania the Arcade Game
    10. Star Wars Arcade

Worst Game (or let's say, my most disliked as I know it somehow has its supporters):
    Motocross Championship

So, what are your favorite games for the add-on? I realize a top 10 is asking a lot, but I'd be curious to see your top 5 or so. And feel free to comment on the picks of Sega Lord X or my own if you'd like.

    I really like these:

    Virtua Racing DX
    Virtua Fighter
    Doom
    Space Harrier

After that many of the other games I've played might rank lower than some that I either haven't play enough of or haven't tried at all (but tend to be ports).

My DOOM cart stopped working about 2 years ago, so didnít play it enough to give it a grade. I remember it looking pretty rough.

    My top 10 are:

    1 - Space Harrier
    2 - Shadow Squadron
    3 - Star Wars Arcade
    4 - Zaxxon Motherbase
    5 - Virtua Racing
    6 - knuckles Chaotix
    7 - Virtua Fighter
8 - 36 great Holes (cues porn music)
    9 - DOOM
    10 - *

    * I only have 9 games.

Like SegaLord I also prefer the 32x version of Blackthorn over the PC original and glad to have it in my library. But I also am still impressed somewhat by Metalhead although that game gets a lot of hate.

Of the games I've beaten on 32X, I'd rank my enjoyment as follows, going most to least:

    Night Trap
    Metal Head
    Fahrenheit
    Motocross Championship
    Mortal Kombat II
    Kolibri
    Blackthorne

Backwards from a lot of people, I know. But I hated Blackthorne and didn't enjoy Kolibri, and for better or worse I don't like the way MKII feels on the 32X.

I had great fun playing through Night Trap and (to a lesser extent) Fahrenheit with my wife, while Metal Head is very underrated. And Motocross Championship was a grind, but I actually like the way it plays; it's an ugly and undercooked game, but it's also one of the only racing games I've ever enjoyed enough to finish (on all difficulties!), and it's so nice to play one with no rubberbanding.

As for games I haven't finished, Space Harrier and Virtua Fighter (which I beat on some low difficulty settings) are really nice.

I seem to recall playing that Motocross game, but I can't find the cart anywhere.

I just realized that it was Supercross 3D on the Jag. That game was pretty bad as well.

It's been years since I attempted to play Motocross, but man, I thought it was an absolute mess. Over the years though, goldenband and sheath have both defended it with compelling arguments. I suppose I should give it another try soon.

Every race definitely starts out that way. The trick is to wait a moment when the race begins, and let everyone smash into each other ahead of you, then cut around them and compete with the remaining 4-5 bikers who pose a threat. Then the other thing is to master leaning forward and back, which don't just keep you from crashing, but also increase your speed when properly applied.

I wouldn't try to defend the game to a serious racing game aficionado -- I lack the expertise to do so, or to pass meaningful judgment -- and, as I said, it's seriously undercooked and totally lacks bells and whistles. But the fact that I actively enjoyed learning the courses and mastering them enough to place 1st in each race (which was the challenge I set myself) made it worthwhile for me. I didn't bother with tricks/stunts at all.

I guess it's kind of like my preference for trashy, early FPS and mech games like Kileak, Krazy Ivan, Escape from Monster Manor, Immercenary, Hover Strike -- or, for that matter, Metal Head. Newer games allow, and are often built for, a kind of virtuosity I don't have, so the slower, clunkier ones are right up my alley.

BTW my recollection from people who have played both is that Supercross 3D on the Jaguar is markedly worse than Motocross 32X, but I can't say firsthand. It certainly looks worse.

Itís pretty bad. I donít recall it having many opponents on the course. It seemed more like you were battling the track than any opponents, because you pretty much left them in the dust. Iíll have to dust off the Jaguar this afternoon .

I have not played any 32x games for many years, but I bought it when it was new and I greatly enjoyed it for a while. I do own a 32x, hooked up to a Genesis model 2. Anyway, my favorites and other comments about the games I've played are:

    Top 5

    1. VR Deluxe - fantastic!
    2. Doom
    3. Virtua Fighter
    4. Space Barrier and Afterburner
    5. Fred Couples Golf, nothing special but a playable game.

Motocross seemed like amazingly poorly coded crap, but if you play it enough you'll find some fun racing and jumps.
QB club, I actually played this a lot but can't remember much.
Cosmic Carnage is the worst and most disappointing game. Ech.

Fun video, but poorly researched as shown in his comment about Mortal Kombat II for 32X

And the arcade intro and endings are here in all their glory!"
This is false, the intro's have their artwork for sure, but the endings all reuse the same picture from the biography instead of the original ending art.

Interesting. Speaking of MKII, I recall putting time into the 32x port and feeling that it didn't play as well as the Genesis version. Now, it has been years since I've played them, but I had the Genesis version when it was new, and put countless hours into it, and didn't pick up the 32x version until probably the early 00s, and never played it nearly as much as the Genesis one, so perhaps that has something to do with my perception. But I'd be curious to see if there's a difference in the frame rate or animations in the character sprites, because it legitimately felt different to me. I'll play them both back to back soon to see if it's just my memory playing tricks on me.

Edit: Also, I'd be curious to see what your 32x favorites are, NeoVamp.

Probably the same as everybody, in no specific order..

    1. NBA Jam TE
    2. Virtua Racing
    3. WWF Arcade
    4. Knuckles Chaotix
    5. Space Harrier
    6. After Burner

    I guess that's about it.

I think I pretty much like all the 32X games, with the exception of that furry animals fighting game. Never tried it because I'm pretty sure I'll hate it. It's too bad we didn't get a castlevania 32X or an original Ecco the dolphin game on 32X. An original Toejam and Earl or another Eternal Champions game would have been awesome, as would maybe a spruced up version of Super Fantasy Zone with improved graphics and sound and some zooming and scaling effects thrown in. Also would have loved to see that sonic extreme game. I think it looked pretty neat honestly. But here goes:

    1. Shadow Squadron
    2. Virtua Racing
    3. DarXide
    4. Space Harrier
    5. Afterburner
    6. Star Wars arcade
    7. Zaxxon
    8. T-Mek
    9. Knuckles Chaotix
    10. Kolibri (just bc I kind of like the graphics)

(and I can't in good conscience leave Virtua Fighter off so I'll have to cheat and do 11 games)
