He didn't say that Nintendo's consoles are "hardware for kids and teens."
He said that Nintendo's consoles do better with kids and teens (more literal translation: "Nintendo's hardware is stronger with kids and teens").
This is... not a very shocking statement? It's an observation of the industry that I think is pretty accurate (in Japan especially) going back to the '80s.
The Mega Drive itself was marketed to the older crowd as an alternative to the more kid-focused NES/SNES.
