    FYI: The title of this thread is inaccurate, and I think people are making a fuss about nothing due to the initial inaccurate translation.

    He didn't say that Nintendo's consoles are "hardware for kids and teens."

    He said that Nintendo's consoles do better with kids and teens (more literal translation: "Nintendo's hardware is stronger with kids and teens").

    This is... not a very shocking statement? It's an observation of the industry that I think is pretty accurate (in Japan especially) going back to the '80s.

    The Mega Drive itself was marketed to the older crowd as an alternative to the more kid-focused NES/SNES.
