Power Drift question

So, something I've never quite been able to figure out with Power Drift is the car/character selection at the beginning of the game. No matter which car you select, you always drive the blue car. What's actually going on? Are you choosing a rival to focus on defeating, or what?

Aren't you choosing the human you're playing as, as well as the tracks you're playing on by choosing the different cars in the beginning? I know it flips from the other color to blue when the track loads which is annoying, but you're still choosing different stuff when choosing amongst the cars.

Maybe its like Daytona USA and if you have another cab linked that cab will always play as a different color.
