Real early at this point, but I just saw on Yuzo Koshiro's twitter, that he (along with his company Anciet) is making a new Shmup for the Genesis/MD.

WOW! I wonder if this will be officially published by Sega or if they will go independent? I've picked up a bunch of MD/GEN schmups recently so would prefer something in a different genre but man we're getting a new game from Yuzo Koshiro himself!!!
The continued support for the Genesis/Megadrive, so long after its official support, is just so incredible. It really says a lot about the quality of the hardware, and the impact it had on older developers, and new developers alike.
I'm going to be all over this game. I can't wait to see and hear more.
SEGA-Jorge
No. That would take a complete change in their stance over the years.
Their main reason for not licensing such new releases, even the Japanese ones is: they cannot risk licensing software for hardware units that are decades past their supported period, and they also don't have anymore a QA department capable of testing and certifying games for real hardware Mega Drive and its many variations.
Based on the information we got access to in recent years, even the Tec Toy releases from BITD which were developed far away from Japan had to be submitted for SOJ's testing and approval prior to being published in Brazil or South America only.
Darius (2019) included in the original Mega Drive-mini was licensed by Sega. One of the main reasons was the fact that its release was tied only and directly to a new piece of hardware whose manufacturing was overseen by SOJ.
Darius Extra Version, on the other hand, is NOT licensed by Sega, only by Taito.
And the wording about the hardware platform it was targeted to was carefully crafted to say: for MD-compatible devices.
So it doesn't really state that it is to be used with the Sega Mega Drive.
Thanks for explaining all of that and it now makes sense thank you. I wondered why they hadn't but I didn't realise that they had licensed Darius for the Mega Drive mini. I never thought that it would be tied to them needing to support it from a hardware point of view.
What about the re-release of Turma da Mônica na Terra dos Monstros? Not quite the same thing since it was TecToy and a re-release rather than a new game, but still it says it's licensed by Sega.

Yeah, very similar to MD Mini and Darius (2019).
They clearly state that the functioning can only be guaranteed to the Mega Drive (2017) by Tectoy. Which uses the RedKid 2500 SoC (as is the case with AtGames' Firecore, MD Play, etc.).
Also, in the case of Tectoy, keep in mind they have never broken their relationship with SOJ; they keep sending reports to them about licensed products sales, etc.
So it's not like they made a one-off deal for this release.
Wait so TecToy COULD release new homebrew games licensed from Sega (and translation of unlicensed or japan only games from BITD) if they bought the distribution rights for Brazil (I assume they are not allowed to publish anything outside the country) ?? Would Sega greenlight this?

I'm all for the Genesis getting more shooters, I love the TG16/PC Engine but it irks me just a little that it has more shooters.
I wonder why this isn't getting more interest??? It looks awesome.
Im really looking forward to seeing how this turns out. Surprised more people aren't talking about this...
