The Atari 2600 version of Joust is the only version of the game I’ve played until recently, I haven’t played it since I was a kid, how “arcade accurate” is it?

The 2600 version isn't really arcade accurate at all. Graphical limitations aside, the speed is different and there are fewer combatants. It's still a great version of the game and a lot of fun though. The NES version is closer to the arcade, but still not quite right, and they "enhanced" the graphics which I'm not crazy about. Apparently the Famicom version kept the original graphics, but I've never played that one. I think the port on the Genesis and SNES 'Williams Arcade's Greatest Hits' is the best home port from the 80s/90s console days. It's fast and furious just like the arcade.

But the 2600 game is still tons of fun, I think they did a great job with it. But it's definitely a more laid back version of the game. If you want that arcade-level Joust intensity, it just ain't gonna get you there.

I have only ever played the arcade, Genesis, and Atari 400/800 versions, which were all great. I like to use a glide maneuver that requires holding down the flap button. Does the 2600 version have that? Just curious.

Regarding 2600 Joust, I snapped a pic of the directions portion of the manual. Excuse the size, but I kept the image lossless to make it easier to read.

Edit: Also, having played it again, I can say that holding down the button does make you drop slightly slower than not. I suppose you could call it gliding, but the difference between falling while holding down the button and not holding it is not a dramatic one.

I just watched Space Invaders: Invasion Day on youtube and got to thinking how cool space invaders '91'might have been.

You could have 2 levels of traditional style and a third level that plays like dynamite duke.
