Default Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls

Nothing is sadder than to have to watch a classic franchise waste away like some washed up child star. Lamentably, that's what fans have had to do with the legendary Double Dragon series. After two incredible arcade installments and an awesome SNES release, there's been nothing but disappointment. It hit a new low with Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls, a pathetic attempt to cash in on the magic of Street Fighter II, which was the last nail in the coffin for the granddaddy of the beat-'em-up genre. The series did a stint in rehab with the stellar Game Boy Advance release and an appearance on Xbox Live Arcade, but it appears that a Robert Downey Jr.-like turnaround is still beyond its reach. We've a full review of The Shadow Falls, and never has a name been so fitting. Have a read and witness a franchise hit rock bottom.

I never even gave this game a chance ever since they released III for genesis and I bought it from Video Game Exchange, one of the first of many times I have been ripped off by them. That game is pretty bad, but this one looks so bad it could make me cry, like a game going from being a valedictorian in high school to being a crack dealer in less than a year or something.

Its not "Double Dragon Vs. Battletoads, its Double Dragon AND Battletoads: The Ultimate Team" which is a classic.

Its pretty much safe to say that DD is like the Land Before Time series for video gaming: bad sequel after bad sequel after bad sequel until its beaten to death.

you know, i disagree. I really liked the original double dragon for Genesis, it was the one I grew up with when I was little.

As previously stated, this would be mostly Super Double Dragon (Return of Double Dragon in Japan), a SNES exclusive which is an alternate retelling of the original Double Dragon story.

In the Mega Drive, I guess this hole is covered by "Battletoads - Double Dragon" which was also released between Double Dragon 3 and Double Dragon V.

After all, the Double Dragon V labeling was just a Tradewest strategy to give some sort of continuity-relevance to this poor fighting game actually based on the American cartoon show.

That's a neat fighting game. Pretty superior to the poor Double Dragon V, which I personally have just for collection purposes (as I love the series).

Give it a try if you love the series and have the opportunity.

Double Dragon and "Battletoads - Double Dragon" are nice, even if the latter is more a Battletoads game than a Double Dragon one, but it's a good game overall. The first Double Dragon, on the other hand, is a decent port of the original arcade on his own, only flawed by a speeded up gameplay.

It's a shame the Double Dragon II port has bland graphics and gameplay slowdown issues, because it could have been another good one. I liked the extended Stage 2. In fact, I would have loved the same extension to the rest of the stages, similar to what was done with the NES version and its PC-Engine remake.

Double Dragon 3 and Double Dragon V suck. I agree with that. Double Dragon 3 is even better on the Mega Drive than in its original and awful arcade incarnation.

I have to wonder who's brilliant idea it was to make the Double Dragon cartoon into a fighting game. If the right people had done it, this could have been a classic. I may still get a copy. I have a soft spot for utter garbage.

Has anyone ever played the Game Boy versions? I have DD2 and DD3, and they're really nothing special.

However, they're head and shoulders above DDV, which really has a lot of nerve claiming to be a part of the normal series. I doubt many of us would have been so disapointed if DDV had simply excized the "V" part.

    EDIT: Grammar

i have Double Dragon 2 on game boy and i had but traded part 3

i like Double Dragon 2 on game boy seeing as its really a Kunio-kun game Acclaim got the game Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun: Bangai Ranto Hen from Technos. Acclaim changed a few thing and then slaped the Double Dragon name on to it

Upon trying this on an emulator, I can safely say I kind of like this game. I mean, it's dumb, but hey, I like dumb. Cartoon is hilariously stupid though.

Underrated, here at least. Brutal gets a 5 and an 8 while this gets a 2? This isn't a great game by any measure, but it plays somewhat competently unlike the complete garbage fire that's Brutal.
