    Sonic Battle Squadron

One of the first space shooters to grace the Genesis (and certainly one of the first third party shooters) was Electronic Arts' Battle Squadron. As challenging as it was hard, the game offered up some great two-player simultaneous action, and many consider it a favorite to this day. Read our full review and see if this one deserves a space on your shelf.

I remember some transparent-looking cloaked enemies in this game... but that really is the only thing that stands out when I think of Battle Squadron.

Worst shmup on the genesis/md and probably any other console. This game even makes bad shmups seem great and playable. I guess you should buy it just to see how bad a shmup can be and appreciate other games that you previously might have thought were much worse rating them on a curve when you play this ultimate retarded assfucking piece of shit son of a bitching game that is the greatness of battle squadron.

Many Amiga fans consider this one of the best shooters ever made.
One dude even got offended when I told him how generic this is. Why? Where is the appeal?

    I understand now.

I tried this on the Amiga and this version is far superior.

For starters, the music sounds 10 times better, and the explosions are satisfying.

Also, the underground levels in the genesis are made complicated by having floating barriers that you run into; not the case in the Amiga version.

Graphics are - to my surprise - far better on the Amiga.

    So-

    Sega Genesis Version-4/10

    Amiga Version-8/10

Seeing as I find the Amiga version to be horribly overrated, even more than Xenon 2, I should probably not touch the genesis version of this game.
    This thread needs more... ENGINEERS

You are right. BS gets old fast even on the Amiga.

I can't see myself going back to it anytime soon.

    I love this description.
It is indeed hard to enjoy a shooter wherein the enemies can fire at you after scrolling out the bottom of the screen, some enemies have cloaking, and there are giant coral type projections that overlay the screen--not translucent projections, opaque.

Still, I want to best this fucker so would somebody tell me how many stages there are? I want to know how many strokes of the lash.

Kollision, you need to do this game. Unless this is one you gave up on. As man, I don't know what to think of it at all. It's like something draws me in, yet totally creeps me out so I run away just as fast as I show up. Why I've been forever very quietly waiting for it to show up on your 1cc list.

Well, after putting in some more time with it today, I figured out what draws me in. It's a Raiden clone... well, Euro Raiden clone. Aimed bullets, wide spread shot, straight lazer (only it goes wider then Raiden when powered up), bombs, and even timed colour switching powerup icons for weapons. Just no missiles for secondary (would of been nice).

What's scares me away is the Euro shmup vibe (it always does) and difficulty which is probably with enough Euro variable too (strangely and/or badly balanced).

Played it enough today to make some progress. Once I get wide shot, it feels like I can hang above ground for quite some time, which reminds me. Does this game loop the above sections & with difficulty boost too? The bosses are below, but those sections are quite hard. Recall a 1cc video of this game awhile back and I thought I recalled him skipping the first hole? Maybe he wanted to be more powered up to make things easier? It's what I'm thinking. That and maybe something more powerful like green/blue lazer weapon, since the below ground sections have some bullet sponge enemies that would be nice to eliminate almost as fast as popcorn enemies.

... This game really is a creepy oddball. Like that really smelly guy who I met sometimes waiting for the elevator. But I'm very curious if it's a good enough STG too? And that smelly guy could be a good person still too?

This was one of the games I got with my MD near PAL launch day - that and Sword of Sodan (can't blame my Mum for that one, I thought it would be great on account of the box screenshots), and of course Altered Beast was the pack-in.

I was impressed by the graphics and the bass sound, coming from the Master System this was definitely a major step up. Those cloaked enemies wowed me immediately.

Play this one with a rapid fire pad to properly enjoy it IMO, and don't feel bad about it. It's a Euroshmup obviously, but one of the few (actually the only one) I plan to revisit 'cos I got nowhere with it when I was a kid. I'm a lot better now though.

I wouldn't be lying if I said my opinion of the game has changed somewhat over time. Helps the devs have recently released a PC version.

Some stuffing around is necessary to get the mouse working properly with the fire trigger on the mouse (the ship stutters normally otherwise), otherwise, it's bloody fantastic.
