    Thumbs down Tecmo World Cup

Like soccer? Sure, most of the world does. Why then, would a company so closely tied to sports such as Tecmo go and release the dud that is Tecmo World Cup? Talk about no frills - this is as bare bones as they get. I guess the company released just how lackluster an effort the game was, since they changed the name in Japan. No need to contaminate foreign consoles, I guess. Read our full review, and then go grab a copy of FIFA.

Tecmo World Cup '92 was released in the US by Atlus as Tecmo World Cup. There's Tecmo World Cup '92 (the Japanese version) and Tecmo World Cup (the American version). That's it.

It seems to be based off of Tecmo World Cup '90 (AC). And going by our research at GDRI, the MD/GEN version appears to have been developed under SIMS by Hertz.

I wanted to clarify that with Melf, it was released in the US as Tecmo World Cup, the sequel to the Japanese Tecmo World Cup. It was developed by Sims then Tecmo threw their name and licencing on it and released it and I don't know why.

Melf you may want to rewrite your intro for the main page saying that it was released here in the states. There is a few things I want to change in the review now just to help clarify that it was released in the states but I am not changing the body or the review as a whole.

So, then this is the same game with two names? If so, we need to change that in the review, as well as the box art.

I'm going to clarify in the review. Melf you may want to keep the boxart for the review because if someone ever reviews the first game in the series then we will have two games listed as Tecmo World Cup in the reviews section, the other way of doing it would be to change the boxart to the american one but keep the listing as Tecmo World Cup '92. I'm going to revise the review as soon as I'm done with this post and email it to you. I apologize for the confusion.

If the Japanese version is just the same game with a different name, then we should post the American box art. We always post the US art when a game is released in more than one region.

Melf, I see you redid my review and it looks nice now. I would still list it as Tecmo World Cup 92 since it is a sequel afterall, I may try to find a copy of the original Japanese Prequel then review that too.

A crappy soccer game I enjoyed as a kid, but, nowadays, as Melf says, is a dud. A guilty pleasure back then, I loved the BGM. It made me think of the anime version of Captain Tsubasa (which licensed games are still being made by Tecmo).
As a sidenote, this a port of a Tecmo coin-op. A hack of it, Euro League, was pretty common in my neighbourhood. It had the 8 original national teams switched with European clubs: IIRC, FC Barcelona (my fav team always goes first), Real Madrid, Atlético de Madrid, Napoli, Juventus, Milan, Bayern Munich and Liverpool. Still have a play on MAME now and then.

Edit: Checked the game again, and Juventus and Liverpool are NOT on this. Instead, there were Inter Milano and PSV Eindhoven. Also, I learned this hack was made in Italy.

    Some updates here:

    1) I remember it moving way slower when I was a kid, and even back in 2017. I suppose it's because what I rented back and played later was actually a Genesis rom that ran at 60 Hz, while my console was PAL: now that I have it modded, it plays much like the original arcade, with better graphics than it, I shall add.
    2) ... Which doesn't mean it's good, now. It has aged terribly, and the arcade had a charm this game lacks: I'll even dare to say it was obsolete already back in '92. Sims has done better things, indeed.

Good music during the matches, though!
