Fun game, but definitely better with two players. One player mode is kinda boring. I agree that Tyris is still such a babe.

Revising my previous rating, I'd give it 8/10. This is a great port of the arcade original.
The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.

Golden Axe was a classic back in the day, but has aged poorly and is too easy.

I can't believe someone said they like the SMS version. I've recently spent several hours with it and it's too hard and too sloppy. Sega tried too hard to make this game look so nice and left out the actual game itself. I can't stand that port and think it's one of the worst brawlers on the SMS entirely.

Back in the day I loved golden axe. I was impressed with the arcade and sega genesis version. I still enjoy it.

My only reply now, seeing back, is that the developers could be done the conversion more accurate to the arcade. Even so, its a great game for itself.

I think the farthest I've ever made it in Golden Axe is stage 4, I still need practice...or a friend to play with.

You found the Master System one hard? It's much easier than the Mega Drive version I found. It's a bit choppy on the old 8 bit machine but still a very fun game but once you play the 16 bit version there's no going back I'm afraid.

No matter what anyone thinks of the Genesis or SMS version of the game, Tyris is still a total babe.

She's not on the Master System version. On that you play as Tarik who is Axe-Battler from the Mega Drive/Genesis version.

I really enjoy playing this and GA2 with my girlfriend. The rating system adds an extra level of depth to things, and helps encourage the player towards cleaner and more efficient gameplay (I love knocking enemies off ledges). It's hard to imagine spending much time with the Master System version, especially without Gilius Thunderhead!

This is one of the few games I can get the GF to play, too. Great fun. Not terribly deep, but the word was original enough back in the day to hold interest even if the story wasn't entirely Shakespeare. I always did like the development of having a level play out entirely on a turtle's back. Shame SEGA was so far out to lunch on the Genesis during the end of its life to not bring over GA3...

Golden Axe was one of the first games I headed towards upon entering an arcade in 1989.
At the time it was quite the novelty being able to jump on & ride those creatures while using them as a weapon.
Two player co-op was great as was the duel feature on the Genesis version.
The magic system was very unique & added quite a bit to the gameplay. This was all cutting edge stuff for the time.
While at my friends in early 1990 his brother walked in the room not saying a word holding Golden Axe in his hand. He didn't even own a Genesis, it was for my console.
The Genesis port was great, about the best you could hope for.
We must of played through that 100 times over the next couple of months.
One of my favorite early Genesis games, and the best in the series IMO. Still holds up quite well today.
The first year of the Genesis was just so amazing. Ahh, the memories...
