In retrospect, though, it's another one of Renovation's boring shmups (of which I think Gaiares is the only exception).

More like Sega's boring shooter, as Arrow Flash was developed by Sega.
Gaiares was developed by Telenet of Japan.
    Granada was developed by Wolfteam.

Renovation simply published these games in the USA. :-l

It's the Renovation label. I was referring to the Renovation family of shmups. Was that not obvious?

Not sure how else you could have read it, since Renovation was exclusively a publisher, and therefore any of their games would by definition have to be developed by another company.

Regardless, Arrow Flash is still better than Whip Rush but I think not as fun as other 'second tier' shmups on the Genesis such as Air Busters and Wings of Wor. That's of course assuming we (rightfully) take TFIII, TFIV, MUSHA, and others as the premiere Genesis STGs.

Nah Whip Rush whips Arrow Flash in the rear. The level design is better in Ship Rush, with many interesting obstacles and transitions. Also the bosses are far more unique. I also prefer the locations in WR. Not to mention the punching of "options" against enemies is very satisfying in WR (one of the things I love in it).

Still, I finally have a physical copy of Arrow Flash in my collection so I am biased with my ratings. I like AF's simplicity. It's a fun, simple, old school shooter, that lacks its own identity. The graphics, while not the best on the Genesis, are clean and detailed with some nice parallax. Underrated game for sure man. I recommended it to shooter fans..especially ThunderBlaze.

One of the weakest shmups on the system, its bland, its uninspired and its mediocre either 4/10 or 5/10 for me.

Personally I think Whip Rush kicks the crap out of this game, In fact I think Whip Rush might be one of the most underrated shmups on Mega Drive to be honest.

It kinda boggles my mind that this game was made by Sega. You'll expect a superior product from sega, especially on THEIR system.

I think you are being too harsh with this game though. Turning it on hard gives it that extra punch.

Ever played Transbot on the SMS?

In fact, wait a minute, Transbot's Japanese name was Astro Flash wasn't it?!

Wrong, Renovation was a US subsidiary of Telenet Japan (they developed their own original games).

Did SEGA ever make a truly great SHMUP? Arrow Flash, Whip Rush, Bio-Hazard Battle were all average.

Well, I don't think anyone but you thinks Bio Hazard Battle is particularly average anyway to be honest, being that its pretty well liked around here, and got nothing but respectable reviews back in the day, I've already said how I feel about Whip Rush.

As far as I'm concerned both Whip Rush, and Bio Hazard Battle are at least 2 full points higher than Arrow Flash, they're not really comparable in quality at all.

Whip Rush was developed by Vic Tokai.

As for BHB, I think it's a great shmup. Love it!

I remember morons at EGM giving it 6s.
