    Thumbs up Beyond Oasis

Yuzo Koshiro's challenging action/RPG was well-received by gamers, though far too many people missed out on its Saturn-only prequel. The original still impresses today, with great presentation and engaging gameplay. Read our full review for all the details.

    There was a saturn prequel?

This was a pretty good title and Yuzo Koshiro once agian delivers a great soundtrack.

I thought The Legend Of Oasis on the Saturn was a sequel, not a prequel? I wonder how they labeled it as a prequel? I should play these two games again! They were both really good action adventure games.

Legend came out after Oasis but the story is a prequel.

Beyond Oasis is one of the best games I've ever played. Great graphics, innovative gameplay, and parts of it had the most incredible atmosphere--helped along by the music, of course--of almost any game I've ever played. Oh, and it was *fun*--they still knew how to do that back then. Complete sweetness. Even though it's almost absurd to me that it didn't launch a million sequels, I suppose it's for the best...[thinks about Sonic and almost cries].

I hate how the PAL version of this won't play in 60hz mode.

I hated that too. Until I found the Expanded 4:3 feature of my TV, which changes the screen into the same as when in 60 Hz, but still stays in 50 Hz.

Good game this, fun to play, good graphics and sound effects, but I do think it is Yuzo Koshiro's weakest soundtrack. IMHO the music doesn't really play to the Mega Drive's strengths, it almost sounds like a MIDI version of an orchestral score to me. Something like Gauntlet IV pulls of a similar style much more effectively.

Defenders of Oasis isn't related to Beyond or Legends. Different game entirely by a different company.

Yup yup. Persevere through Legends; it's a great game with a bit of a confusing middle.

Why was this called "The Legend of Thor" in other countries? And was the storyline changed?

It was originally Story of Thor in Japan. Ali was named 'Thor' and the story was different.

Tony Van headed up the translation for the UK and US markets. (www.goodspear.com)

Beyond Oasis was another international game that needed a producer to port it over to English (but in this case, I was in charge of both American English and UK English!)

It arrived with a badly-translated Japanese story, one that made very little sense. So when it didn't make sense, I created my own version of what I thought was right. I think it came out OK, nobody every said anything!

I also changed the name of the Arabian Nights-type character to Ali in a jibe at Aladdin)*
