Congrats, you two are really making me want to give this game another chance.

    Some other notes:

After beating the game recently with Slash and then Larcen, I do think the characters are rather unbalanced (not that it's necessarily a bad thing). Slash is effective because of his large reach with his club, which is not vulnerable to being attacked (as it's not part of his body).

Larcen is more vulnerable, more often, because he is attacking with his body. However, Larcen has a couple crazy moves that might balance out his greater vulnerability. His air-sweep (which is jumping back while shooting his grabbling hook) can be great when close to an opponent. And his Power Sweep (when he uses his grabbling hook to swing across the screen) seems to make him invincible. And his ceiling crawl can get him out of danger. (Not to mention the effectiveness of his ninja star projectile, his grabbling hook projectile, and his crouching strong kick, which slides forward, similar to Sub-Zero's sliding low kick.)

I just started playing as Xavier and he seems quite overpowered, compared to both Slash and Larcen. Xavier can send out freeze-attacks pretty frequently. The IS used seems variable, and I don't know why, but he can send his freeze attacks pretty frequently anyway.

Plus his regular strong punch attack is crazy, he throws his spinning staff in front of him, so his basic strong punch is like a huge projectile (which doesn't take Inner Strength). And he also has a nice sliding kick.

I was also surprised that Xavier can make his opponent morph into a different character! This would be nuts if playing with 2 people. I don't think I've seen this happen when playing against Xavier in 1-player gameplay. This is an example of how there are so many moves packed into this game, that it remains unpredictable and crazy lol.

    ...

EDIT: I got through the game fine with Xavier, but I haven't legit beat the last boss with him yet. (I did use savestates, just to beat him and see his ending text.) I spent hours fighting him, loading a save-state to the start of his match, and I had a blast lol, even though I didn't legitimately beat him yet w/ Xavier. The last boss blocks most of his freeze-attacks. And Xavier's attacks seem to leave him vulnerable a lot. And so apparently his frequent vulnerability is supposed to balance out his rather over-powered attacks.

(For example, his basic strong punch is that giant spinning-staff attack, which is like a huge projectile, which can hit opponents twice. But if the attack doesn't land, then Xavier is just standing there, ready to be hit.)

Even though I haven't quite beaten the Eternal Champion, it's very fun fighting him. I'm glad to be able to repeat the fight though, using a save-state to keep starting at the beginning of the match, so I can get better with him.

Was this game overrated in its time, when several magazines said it was better than Street Fighter 2? Yup.

Is this a bad game? Nope.

This mash between SF2 and Mortal Kombat is a colorful, darkly humorous and overall decent effort by Sega to create their first fighting franchise (they made the great with Virtua Fighter. Here's hoping for a 6th installment). It isn't an example of originality - not even the idea of creating a time warp fighting game is new (Alpha Denshi's World Heroes made it first) - and the characters moved a bit like claymation figures (was it some kind tendency in Sega's in-house studios? Chakan also moved like this!), but it was an accesible game with fantastic, very comic book-like aestethics, a rocking title theme and even a customized Sega logo for every character. Also, those overkills were so absurd and imaginative…
Recently, I decided to get started on the Mega-CD emulation, and its version of EC is vastly superior to its lil' cart sister.

I don't have the game, never heard of it until now. I couldn't stop checking out the sequel on the Sega CD and now interesting it all was. I couldn't stop looking at the stages, characters and whatever. I'm really surprised how this game competed, not just against Mortal Kombat but also the Neo Geo games that was around the game. I'm still jaw dropped about it. I like how they placed that 80s Asian feel into the game to make the game more epic. Works so well.

One thing I think is interesting in this game is just how heavily it leans on composite/RF blurring to simulate transparency effects with mesh dithering (the mist in Xavier's stage, for example). I'm not sure I can think of another game where it's used so much, and it was actually toned down significantly in ECCD: if you check out Xavier and Trident's stages you'll see that the meshed mist effects were replaced with solid ones, and the mist was removed completely from Jetta/Chin Wo's stage .

As a fighting game taken on its own merits when examined in the harsh light of the day, it's not going to impress.

I was disappointed when this finally released, after it being majorly hyped up by the mags of the time. It was certainly not the competition to the SFII port it was touted as being.

Cosmic Carnage?! Seriously?! Eternal Champions is leagues ahead of CC to the point of absurdity. CC is slow and clunky, was obviously rushed through development. The charm you speak of, I get because the whole atmosphere and vibe of the game is cool, but sadly the gameplay execution is abysmal.

But Eternal Champions is one of the best 16-bit 2D fighters. There is so much depth here with a plethora of specials and finishing moves. And obvious time and care has been taken in the presentation with unique, detailed characters and levels. No, it's not as good as Street Fighter, but what is? I think what holds it back for a lot of people is the fact that to truly excel at the game and experience what all it has to offer, one has to put a lot of time into it to learn all the moves properly. Back when it was new, this wasnt a problem because I only had maybe a dozen games or so for the Genesis in the mid-90s, but nowadays I imagine the game can seem brutally difficult on its surface and not worth the effort for most.

I'll add that the Sega CD version is practically a sequel as it's filled with so more content. That really is the best way to play the game for those looking to get into it.

Yea I had a wtf... moment when EC's was compared to Cosmic Carnage. EC's is one of the best 16-bit fighters released. EC's CD might be my 2nd favorite 16-bit fighter after SSF2 TNC's.

Fighters came along way after the 16-bit era so I can understand people not appreciating it now.
Beat Em Up- Streets of Rage 2
    Platformer- Sonic 3 and Knuckles
    Run and Gun- Gunstar Heroes
    Adventure- Story of Thor
    Action- Shinobi 3
