    heart Sonic The Hedgehog

In 1991 Sega released a game that they hoped would be the anti-Mario. The game was Sonic The Hedgehog and it did everything Sega dreamed it would and a whole lot more. Sonic is a game based on the blue hedgehog you have undoubtedly heard of before or seen in one of his many games.

    Sonic

Oddly enough, I didn't get around to playing this game until after I had gotten Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, and Sonic Spinball. It was Sonic 2 that really got me hooked on Genesis, and it took awhile for my parents to find Sonic 1 for my birthday/Christmas present.

No way. The SMS Sonic 1 is plagued with slowdown with bridges, which ruins parts of the game, especially The Bridge Zone which is a truly garbage level in my opinion with no flair whatsoever. They decided to keep Labyrinth Zone in but take out Star Light Zone, and Scrap Brain Zone Act 2 is ridiculously confusing. I've never actually gotten past Scrap Brain Act 2 even.

Also no level select cheat pisses me off, so I can't play the last level, which looks like a huge ripoff of winged fortress from Super Mario Bros. 3.

But for an 8-bit game, it's very good.

Yeah, the SMS version is good but not nearly as good as the Genesis version. I'd give the SMS version an 8/10, I did finish it a few times but am quite tired of it and it didn't have any of the lastability of the Genesis version.

I agree, the levels are dull, and not as good as the Genesis levels.

Sonic Chaos pretty much fixed all of that though.

Mega Drive version clearly wins. I have no idea how many times I've played through that game, but it's.. lots. I do like the SMS Sonic a lot though, it's in my top 3 SMS games and far superior to the other 2 SMS Sonics. (Not least because it has Robotnik, and not demented yet ridiculously easy metal animals, as end of level bosses.)

Can some of you Sonic 1 experts tell me what is the trick to getting Sonic to run around freely after you hit the goal sign and the score tallies up?

I remember when this came out. Sears had a kiosk. The "wow" factor wore off quickly for me. After beating the first three levels I was like "eh" and happily went back to playing SMB.

It took the sequel to really get me hooked on Sonic. I played the Game Gear version of Sonic 1 years before I even got to try the Genesis original.

Also, I'll repeat my previous request:
How do I get Sonic to run around freely after you hit the goal sign and the score tallies up?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jump offscreen while the tally appears.

Also, Sonic 1 don't deserve no 10/10. 9.5 at best. It gets demolished by its sequels =P

You just need to be in the air at the point when the game takes over the controls from you and walks Sonic off the screen. So basically, when the results music is about to kick in, jump. You'll have to messing around to get the timing down, but eventually you'll pull it off (you've got, what, 12 chances?).

I usually do that a few times per game.

Whoops, somehow I didn't see that earlier.
