I forgot what it was. Was it awesome? Who knows? Certainly not me.

Josh: maybe you could list 5 reasons why it is awesome.

I can list 5 reasons why it's awesome:

    • Music
    • Graphics
    • Gameplay
    • Level Design
    • Art Style/Direction

    Ha!

How do you suppose that would work? The cartridges are lot smaller.

@ Josh = How about putting a Turbo Duo into a waffle iron?

I re-played this a couple of months ago, and it is still fun to play! I actually played Sonic 2 first like some others who posted, since that was my pack-in game. I missed using the spin dash attack, but I still enjoyed the game then, and now.

Sonic 1 to me is still fresh, and stood the test of time not like altered beast that shows his age.
too old for video games huh?

I've also come to appreciate this game even more with the passing of time. For years I preferred the faster pace of Sonic 2 and the luscious graphics of Sonic 3-S&K over the simplistic and frustrating level design of Sonic 1. But after I started to play it competitively (Speed Runs, High-Scores, etc.), I really has become one of my favorite games of all-time, if not my favorite Sonic game. It's just so much fun to challenge yourself to better your times on Green Hill Zone! The best I've been able to do is 0:26 seconds in Act 1. I'm also able to do pretty well in Acts 2 & 3, but don't remember my times.

Sonic 1 is my 2nd favorite game in the series, right behind Knuckles' Chaotix. I always thought the game had a good balance of speed and puzzle in the levels. Labyrinth Zone of course sucks, but the rest are rather well-done. One of my favorites from my childhood.

I would have sold my soul to get this game on release Date. Nobody bought it, so I had to collect all the money I could get to buy it in 1992.

Also, Sonic 1 don't deserve no 10/10. 9.5 at best. It gets demolished by its sequels =P
In 2004 when this was reviewed, I think the 10/10 rating was not only because of this game (over a decade long classic) but what it spawned like Sonic 2 to Sonic Adventure all the way up to becoming such a world wide recognizable character. I think 9.5/10 is a good rating too.

I play this on Sega CD with Sonic 1 & 2 CD, wish the 5 in 1 disc had these 2 games besides Columns and Super Monaco.

First Genesis game on my HDG 1992 model 1 on Christmas.

Back then i didn't know a whole lot about the genesis or Sonic, i was curious to see what it could do over the SNES which i had first. That and i just thought the system looked really cool. Even back in the day the Model 1 had a distinctly 80's style look that appealed to me. Genesis ended up becoming my favorite console. Partly i think because i was a big fan of 80's and early 90's arcades at the time, and most Genesis games had a very arcade-style feel to them. Even Sonic 1 feels more like an Arcade game than any of the marios. Streets of Rage & Golden Axe series sealed the deal.

SNES titles had the grandiose, expanded stories and looooong duration gameplay(Zelda, FFII, Metroid, etc). Genesis was more for the fast-paced, pick up & play arcade style experience.

After stalling my Sonic-experience for some years, finally sat down with this game this weekend to reach the end (haven't gotten all emeralds yet). What an awesome game! Real good level-design and the smooth controls...

The addictive game play will keep you coming back for more time and time again.
I certainly feel like playing it again even after finishing it, still have lots to explore - and there's sequals!

Heh, I'd have thought this would be too obvious to bump .

Still one of the best for the ol' Genesis. In fact, it's almost like the character was custom made specifically for the Genesis, and Sega never learned.

Well when you put it that way I suppose NiGHTS was supposed to be to the Saturn what Sonic was to the Genesis but it didn't work out.
