Thread: Sega Saturn Game Suggestions?

    Default Sega Saturn Game Suggestions?

Hello all, first time poster here. I recently was able to get my hands on a CIB Japanese Saturn console. It came with KOF '95 and the RAM cart. I used to play my USA Saturn all the time back in the day, and so I have a general idea of some games I want to get again, but there is a lot out there, especially the Japanese release stuff, that I don't know about. The point of me buying the Japanese version in the first place was to play a lot of those cool Japan-only releases that everyone seems to talk about. The first that comes to mind I'll be getting is Dodonpachi, but other than that, I'm kind of out of the loop on what's good out there. I'm also interested in USA games too...really any game that is fun to play. I know there are a lot of experts out there, so any advice is appreciated

Great list, thank you. I had NiGHTS, Virtual ON, Tomb Raider, and Panzer Dragoon II ZWEI back in the day...all great games. I especially loved Panzer Dragoon...always thought it was really out there and strange, but that's why I liked it.

Awesome list there! I'm glad you mentioned Astal. Me and my brother used to love playing that game. I had forgotten about it until you mentioned it.

Looking at their releases right now...looks like some pretty sweet stuff. I wish more of the Japanese stuff came to the US. The Japanese games always seem to have the coolest art too.

What's the one hockey game on the Saturn to get? NHL Powerplay 96 looks promising.

No, it's unbiased analysis. The only fanboyism is people who claim that Hyperstone Heist and Bloodlines are actually as good as their SNES counterparts.

    Pretty awesome list.
I'd add the JP Daytona USA CE (dirty cheap, much better framerate when compared to the first release on the Saturn, original arcade soundtrack option and better controls than the US CCE version).
I'd also replace the original US Sega Rally with JP Sega Rally or Sega Rally Plus, for a bit better graphics and proper 3D controller support.

    Also adding:
Crows: The Battle Action For Sega Saturn (Beat-'Em-Up)* Good 2D brawler, something rare in the 32-bit days.
Dead Or Alive (Fighting)* Superb 3D graphics and great gameplay. A must have.
Fire Pro Gaiden: Blazing Tornado (Wrestling)* A simple game but dirty cheat and pretty much the best 2D graphics and art you'll ever find in wrestling games IMO.
Fire ProWrestling S: 6Men Scramble (Wrestling)* One of the best wrestling games ever made, up to 6 simultaneous players.
Gex (2D Platformer) Very good and fun game. Far superior to the 3DO and PS1 versions. Good looking '90s 2D graphics. It lacks the 3DO save feature, so you'll suffer with the passwords but, seriously, it worth the trouble.
Road & Track Presents: The Need for Speed (Racing) All time classic, a landmark IMO. More content, options and better frame rate than the 3DO version without the texture warping of the PS1's and with the 2P split-screen mode that the PC game lacks.
World Heroes Perfect (Fighting)* Cheaper than most of the 2D fighters on the system and one of the very few to not require any RAM cartridge. Very short loading times, good gameplay; best version of this game IMO.

    Oops. I forgot a couple...

    King of Fighters '96 (Fighting)*
    King of Fighters '97 (Fighting)*

'96 has an English option, which is great. '97 doesn't, but it's a rather good fighting game, and translations for the endings can be found really easily these days.

I have that one and it's pretty decent honestly. The controls are a bit confusing at first though. It is probably one of the better hockey games on the system considering the slim pickings for that genre on the system.

What The Coop already listed plus Gokujou Parodius Da Deluxe Pack, Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius, Sexy Parodius, Elevator Action Returns, Bubble Symphony, Pulirula (pricey as all get out), Puyo Puyo Tsu and Puyo Puyo Sun, Layer Section 1, Capcom Generation 2 (the entire Makaimura/Ghosts N Goblins original trilogy), and Capcom Generation 1 and 4. Throw in the Street Fighter Zero/Alpha titles (there's SFA 2 Gold as well on Street Fighter Collection 1, which is a better version of Alpha 2 IMO).

Saturns got a lot to love, shame the west got shafted out of a lot of great arcade ports and original games.
