Default Amount of consoles sold worldwide

This is very fasicnating if it is totally accurate. We know the battle between SNES and Genesis was close and this shows that. What intrigued me was how badly PS2 destroyed XBox and Gamecube. I thought it was much closer than that. They also left off Turbografx 16 for some reason.

The ps2 was doing well, but more than that, it was being sold long after the Xbox and Gamecube were retired.

But even without that, it wasn't really "close" during the time all 3 systems were competitive.

They also didn't have the atari systems, the 3d0, etc, so I don't see why the TurboGrafx would have been included in this.

Also Im sick of heaing from console fanboys who keep saying PS4 and XOne will outsell PS3 and XBox360 because the pre-orders are high. PC gaming and tablet gaming keep rising and arent going away and they will eat into the sales.

It depends how long the next console generation lasts. If it keeps going long enough they will outsell the ps3 and 360.

Likewise if they get enough demand for the "other" features and that sells a lot of consoles, it may bump up the sales for reasons other than the games.

Tablet/phone gaming isn't really the same market. Pc gaming has its ups and downs, and has been there the whole time.

Its weird because PSOne was the first 100m seller and yet we remember when the NES was huge and mainstream. Video games were still considered kiddie and niche back then and it took Sony to make them mainstream? Haha thats the truth but it still doesnt seem right.

I dont think this is accurate... Saturn and DC definitely sold more units. The 9 million figure for Saturn is just US and Japan AFAIK... The rest of the world would be a few million more units, probably.

The Saturn sold 5.4 million in Japan alone the US moved about 2 million units and the rest come from the other parts of the world.

What I find interesting is that the Dreamcast had roughly an 18 month run and sold 9 million consoles. The Wii U is at that mark and has sold 3 million? That sounds bad.

Also of interest, the DC's numbers for its generation suggest it would have sold in the neighborhood of the other PS2 also-rans, assuming Sega had enough money to actually sustain the competition. A 4-5 year run and a similar rate of sales to that of their first 18 months (around 6 million a year), we're talking 24-30 million units.

    Good point.
Sega Dreamcast 18 months and 9 million units sold, public says: "Ultimate failure from a failed company!!!"
Nintendo Wii U 18 months and 3 million units sold, public says: "Promising, the best is yet to come."

I thought the PS3 is currently ahead of the 360 in terms of overall global sales. Not sure where that graph got it sales figures from?

lol @ you thinking pc gaming is rising. pc gaming is maybe 2-5% of the entire game market. those are facts. just look at big game sales and how horribly they sell on pc. gta 5 sell 25 million, of which 500,000 on pc. just to give an idea.
