You’d never think that a shmup that has you flying a dirigible would be fun, but Steel Empire proves otherwise. Using the whole steampunk theme long before Sky Captain & the World of Tomorrow brought it to the big screen, it was one of the more obscure games in the genre. It was recently revived on the Game Boy Advance, but the Genesis version is the one to own.

Some consider Gaiares to be overrated, and others consider it to be a classic. Released as one of the seemingly endless barrage of shmups in 1990, it still sparks controversy.
Though only released in Japan, Gleylancer is one of the best shooters available on the Genesis. A great shmup (and an expensive one) Gleylancer is an awesome experience.
Anyone with a Sega CD needs to check this game out. Sure, it’s pretty linear and the eye candy covers up the simple gameplay. but it’s awesome nonetheless.
