Teasers: Razing Core

Getting word of a new Master System game is always great, and we try to keep up with all the new releases. Sometimes, it can be a hard thing to do. There’s one developer though, who has burned his name into our memory. Adam, better known as Badcomputer, is a prolific homebrew developer known for titles like Frontier Force, Star Runner, and Blast Arena. His work is exempliary, and he’s been on our radar for some time now. Now he’s back with a glorious new title for our little 8-bit console, and it’s looking excellent so far!

Badcomputer’s new Master System project is titled Razing Core, a vertically scrolling shoot-’em-up that pays homage to the console’s classic Astro Warrior. It just received its first playable demo on itch.io, and after taking it out for a spin, we came away very impressed. Built with a custom engine for managing collisions, behavior, and effects and with additional support from devkitSMS, Razing Core showcases three core attacks (Rapid Shot, Core, and Burst Charge) that make wide use of the Master System controller’s two buttons, and it features some terrific music by chiptune composer Polaria Poyon.

The alpha demo was released just last week and is compatible with both emulators and original hardware. It includes a settings menu, music player, a brief tutorial covering the different attacks, as well as a run-through of the first stage. Despite its short length, the demo level has three difficulty levels delivers fast-paced action, various enemy types, power-ups, and even a boss fight.

We loved Frontier Force and will definitely be awaiting Razing Core’s release (2Minds, perhaps?). Hopefully, it will get a physical version as well, giving us another new Master System title for our libraries.
