Few companies know the strategy genre like Koei, and its Romance of the Three Kingdoms series has endured for decades. The second game appeared on the Genesis, and while it’s a bit rough in the interface, there’s some fun to be had if you’re a fan of political intrigue and nation-building.

Manage resources and public opinion, and drive your hordes forth to victory! All that’s missing is the lamentation of the women.
Liberty or Death
Koei was the master of the console strategy sim, and there’s one game in its catalog that actually lets players relive the American Revolution. Deep and engaging, the game also requires almost as much time as the war itself did, so those easily intimidated by tons of variables and long, drawn-out conflicts should perhaps just declare themselves conscientious objectors instead.

Koei’s seminal simulation franchise lets players manage their own airline company, and while its sequel was much better, the first installment got things off to a great start.
