Socket

Success breeds imitation, they say. Sonic The Hedgehog undoubtedly inspired many a mascot to lace up his boots and dash to the right. Among the pack was Vic Tokai’s Socket, which manages to do everything needed to ooze mediocrity. It’s not a bad game on its own, but it’s entirely too derivative to stand out from the competition.

Hook (CD)

The story of Peter Pan has been around for over a century, and while everyone knows the classic Disney rendition, many have tried to put 1991’s “sequel” Hook out of their minds. Love it or hate it, it was a huge hit, telling the story of a grown up Peter who must return to Never Never Land to rescue his children from Captain Hook. In typical summer blockbuster fashion, it received a video game for several consoles. Sega fans had their hopes raised for the Sega CD version, expecting all kinds of goodness. Instead, they got the Genesis game with a CD soundtrack.

Magical Taruruuto-Kun

Paltformers were a major staple of the Genesis gamer’s diet during its run, and as often happens when something gets really popular, you can indeed have too much of a good thing. Case in point: Magical Taruruuto-Kun, a anime-based game that relied on its license and blatant cuteness more than its gameplay, and the result was a bland affair that was only magical at putting people to sleep.

Cosmic Spacehead

The Genesis is the home to many Amiga ports, as the hardware similarities the two share made it easy for developers to port over their games quickly. Codemasters, ever the Genesis supporter, brought many titles to Sega’s 16-bit wonder, including Cosmic Spacehead. This quirky little point-and-click adventure is the sequel to Linus Spacehead, which saw release on the NES, and we’ve a full review for you. Enjoy!

Daze Before Christmas

Daze Before Christmas is an Australia-only release, a seasonal platformer that Americans missed out on. Being one of the few Christmas-themed titles on the console, there’s obviously some curiosity as to whether or not it’s worth playing.
