The Japanese weren’t immune to the puzzle fever of the early ’90s, either. Several companies churned out some fairly good puzzle games, and for the most part they made it to the U.S. and Europe. A few slipped through the cracks, of course…After all, no matter how popular the genre, it’s inevitable that some games will get lost in the shuffle. Namco’s Megapanel is a good example of a good puzzle game that somehow got forgotten.
Every once in a while, you discover a video game that comes straight out of left field. You can’t really describe it, because there’s precious little to compare it to. You only know that you’re faced with something truly inspired, truly clever. I don’t think there’s a better example of that then Panic!. This game is just damned weird.

Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine is one of the most addictive puzzle games I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing. That’s probably because it uses the legendary Puyo Puyo game play style, which is widely-regarded as being among the best puzzle game systems.
