Pirates! Gold

Swashbuckling adventure on the high seas is what awaits you in Microprose’s stellar Pirates! Gold. Probably one of the best titles on the Genesis, this is the one you show your friends when they say that PC games of the era weren’t suited for consoles. Sailing the Caribbean, looting ships and swooning fair maidens is what it’s all about, and no other game does it better.

Might & Magic: Gates to Another World

When most people think of RPGs, they don’t think of the Genesis. That’s unfortunate, as the console boasts a great library of quality titles (almost as many as it has shmups!). When you’re done with the Phantasy Stars and Shining titles, there’s another game awaiting your attention. Nowhere near as pretty or manageable as those games but boasting a quest almost three times the size, Might & Magic: Gates to Another World is the one Genesis RPG that will make you humble. Trust us, any game with a 169-page instruction manual is one that doesn’t pull its punches.

Shadowrun

One of the most loved pen-and-paper RPGs of all time, Shadowrun came to the Genesis in 1994, still maintaining a cult following to this day. It’s interesting mixture of cyberpunk atmosphere with deep gameplay has kept gamers coming back for more for over a decade, and so strong is its fanbase that the franchise is being revived soon on the Xbox 360. But does the Genesis version truly live up to its pedigree?
