Another month is about to leave us, and Sega-16 says goodbye to a rainy April with edition #41 of our Reader Roundtable series. There are some classics in this one, as well as a few you may never have played. The NHL playoffs are in full swing, so what better way to keep the mood alive than by taking a look at one of the best hockey games ever made? EA’s NHL ’96 refined everything that made previous installments so popular, and in turn it became perhaps the best in the series, something hard to do after the stellar ’94 edition.
As part of the short-lived “EA Kids” line, Sesame Street Counting Cafe featured that famous duo of Grover and Mr. “Fat Blue” Johnson, in a restaurant setting that sought to help kids count food. Read our full review and don’t worry about the fly in your soup; he won’t eat much.
As time goes by, more and more people are returning to Genesis hardware to hack and probe at existing titles, resulting in some interesting results. Our Hacks & Homebrews series looks at such pieces, and the latest installment examines fighting games, most of which have even been sold as bootleg carts! Disney and Sega go back a long way. Mickey Mouse practically lived on the Genesis, and a slew of other properties found their way onto the console. Among the licensed properties to get a game of its own was Bonkers, based on the short-lived cartoon series that featured a former cartoon star turned cop who patrols the Toontown of Who Framed Roger Rabbit fame in search of escaped criminals. Sounds like something to look forward to for seasoned platform gamers, right? Oh, did I mention it’s a Sega Club game? Yeah… can’t win ’em all, I guess.
