October is a great month to go back and play some of the spookier games on the Genesis, Game Gear, and Master System. There are also lots of other titles worth revisiting. The classic Castlevania series was the envy of Master System owners everywhere for many years, until Master of Darkness was released in 1992. An excellent game that sported great presentation and gameplay, it never came to the U.S. on the console, but import versions are thankfully inexpensive. This is one to own!
Hacks & Homebrews: Brave Battle Saga
Brave Battle Saga: Legend of the Magic Warrior may borrow assets from other games, but it puts them to spectacular use. Part hack and part homebrew, it combines new and old elements to create a fun and engaging RPG that has finally been translated into English. Fans of the genre owe it to themselves to give this one a try.
Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends
The popular kids show chugs its way onto the Genesis, and it’s definitely a title made specifically for its demographic. Adults might not find a lot to spend time with here, and honestly, their kids won’t find much to do after spending some time with it. Short and simple, Thomas just runs out of steam too quickly.
