Early in the life of the Mega Drive, Sega of Japan released an AM2-created RPG starring a kid in a super suit. Rent A Hero went on to achieve cult status among Sega fans, but the series has never officially crossed the Pacific. This is a shame, as it’s a quirky title that, while not the best RPG on the console, still manages to be entertaining.
With all the shooters that came to the Genesis in its first two years, it seems strange that some would be left behind. Kaneko’s Heavy Unit was one shmup that missed the boat, most likely because it was seen as too generic compared to powerhouses such as Thunder Force III and Gaiares. Is it worth tracking down now? Game Arts crafted a graphic adventure that is sure to please fans of the classic cartoon on which it’s based thanks to some great comedy and some of the best animation on the Sega CD. Anime and manga fans will enjoy seeing Lum and friends come to the Mega CD in smart and quirky adventure. Don’t let the language barrier keep you away from what is one of the best games of its type.
Wolf Team should be sued for false representation. Devastator may look like a great action title featuring a massive robot, but in reality it’s just a mediocre action title with repetitive gameplay. Aside from a few sparse effects, virtually all the power of the Sega CD goes to cut scenes and music , as the gameplay itself is nothing a cart couldn’t handle.
Cute takes on standard genres are common in video gaming. Shooters with cute characters are a sub-genre all their own, and the trend even extends to sports. Namco made some of the better known examples, and its World Stadium series was highly popular in Japan. Sadly, the west saw it only in the first R.B.I. Baseball game and Batter Up on the Game Gear.
