A new independent title bring single-screen shooting action to the Master System. Frontier Force is a top-down, single-screen twitch shmup that’s great to play when you’ve got the urge to beat the top score. Great presentation and gameplay make this short-but-sweet experience one you’ll want to own, and it’s going to have a physical release!
Westone expanded on the action/RPG turn taken by Wonder Boy in Monster World by adding a larger world and multiple character transformations. The result was a classic sequel that, despite some linear design and cryptic mechanics, remains one of the Master System’s best titles.
Action Fighter tried to be the Master System’s answer to Bally/Midway’s Spy Hunter, but it lacked the same charm and excitement. The result is an average game that doesn’t quite live up to its name. “Average Fighter” would perhaps have been a more accurate moniker.
Taz appeared on just about every Sega console during the early ’90s. Some were better than others, but the often-overlooked Master System version remains one deserving of some attention. It’s not the best of the brand, but what’s there is enough to keep you interested all the way through.
Sega attempted to bring Enduro Racer’s thrilling action to the Master System but sacrificed too much of what made the game such great fun. The result is a port that’s competent but not much more – and that’s just the Japanese version that didn’t have half the game removed.
