Genesis owners with a Power Base Converter have the ability to play classic Master System titles on their console, but some are just little more than proof of how far hardware has come. Thunder Blade is an example of a game that couldn’t emulate the arcade well and made no effort to compensate.
Sega did a great job porting Data East’s arcade shooter, and Darwin 4081 is sure to offer a decidedly different take on space shooters for those who think they’ve seen it all. This Japan-only import sports some solid gameplay and an interesting weapons system, and while it’s not the best shmup around, it’s one that’s worth checking out.
A neat little game released for the Genesis modem in Japan, Aworg manages to be fun despite its flaws. The sparse presentation is thankfully overcome by great level design and challenging gameplay, something maze/puzzle fans will appreciate. It might not be the most complex game around, but it’s one that’s worth spending some time with.
Sometimes, games get canceled for a reason, and Burning Fists is a prime example. Even finished, it would have been a less than mediocre fighter, but in its semi-beta state, its almost too poor to warrant playing. Unless you just have to have every Sega CD game and don’t mind playing what is essentially a late beta, stay away!
Sega attempted to combat the success of Nintendo’s Tetris with Columns, which is a solid game in its own right. Released on the Genesis in 1990, it also received a Master System port, and that version is actually one of the better puzzle games on the console.
